"She also has backup from a local group of 70 homeschooling families who organize group field trips and extracurricular activities. Her children both take lessons in Celtic music on the fiddle, play soccer and basketball and have tried classes in art, hip-hop dancing and kick boxing."

Homeschooling is becoming so popular, there are homeschool sports teams in our area that compete with some private schools.

Yes, and we have programs in our area where kids can take several classes a week in public school in conjunction with home schooling, like a satellite school program.

That sounds great. Where is that?

We don't have children yet but "planning has begun". I have a pretty good reason to like homeschooling - I've spent years teaching in various schools!

My main motive is positive: I so easily see how I could do better - I have background in cognition and development work in addition to education - and I just think I would have a blast doing it. I'm in Manhattan, so I suspect there will be extra hurdles here.

This is almost too great! It sucks the air right out of the argument that "the children don't get enough social activity..." that the left marches out! America does have a generation moving forward!

What do you have? Eight graders going on to college level courses?

That is a very good sign that it is catching on.

I've spend some time talking to home schooled kids who play in my neighborhood. I've found them to be polite, as well as bright. It makes me feel that things just might come out all right.
