Bush Accepts DP World's Offer of Review
The Miami Herald ^ | 02/26/2006 | TED BRIDIS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration said Sunday it will accept an extraordinary offer by a United Arab Emirates-based company to submit to a second - and broader - U.S. review of potential security risks in its deal to take over significant operations at six leading American ports. The plan averts an impending political showdown.

The Treasury Department said in a statement it will promptly begin the review once the company formally files a request for one. It said the same government panel that earlier investigated the deal but found no reason for national security concerns will reconsider it.

In six pages of documents sent earlier in the day to the White House, Dubai-based DP World asked for a 45-day investigation of plans to run shipping terminals in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.

The announcement means the White House likely won't face a revolt by fellow Republicans when lawmakers return Monday from a weeklong break. A united Republican Party can assert that its leaders - both in Congress and at the White House - have taken additional steps to protect national security.

they could form a new company, based in the U.S., under U.S. regulations, to handle this contract.

Read my tag line, for maximum entertainment value that's what they should do.

He'll get his smelly deal, but the fallout will be felt in the election booth. This mishap wont be soon forgotten. The issue is too near to people's hearts.

Can you imagine this? A UAE company is begging the US to investigate it again- after it had passed the first investigation. Wow

It's just to pacify the naysayers.

And the results will be the same, because there's nothing there.

But that won't stop the Unappeasables in our very own party from using this to continue to trash Bush and imply this is the END FOR HIM.

Frankly, I'm sick of them; and the more frantic they post, the more they show what their real problem with this is: THEM ARABS!

Can you believe that stupid story about Bush and the bike? So worried he injured someone but doubtful the same news organization cared about Juanita being injured. Have I mentioned yet today how much I hate the media?

You keep making the same rubber stamp claim on every thread about this matter, but I notice you don't have a shred of evidence. Care to share?

In case you didn't have the opportunity to watch the Armed Services briefing last week, 14 government agencies reviewed this proposal and followed all of the mandates set out by Congress, so I'd really like to hear specifics regarding your claims.

And when the port crap is all over they'll go back to ranting about "THEM MEXICANS" like they've been doing since Jan. 20, 2001.

>>>It appears that congress is caving. <<<

Unwise to count chickens before hatch occurs. Congress is not in session today....

This thing will not acheive back-burner status as long as a Democrat thinks there is life in the negative argument. And right now they are in the drivers seat.

Bush's staff screwed up big time on this one!

One question I've so far been unable to get a straight answer to: If we assume for the sake of argument that this Dubai company really wanted to do us harm, would this deal put them in a better position to do so?

Oppose 35.8%

That is mostly a group of Freepers opposed to the port deal.
There is significant opposition to this, from people who support the WOT, fought for Ms. Schiavo, defended Cheney and Bush, not to mention the opposing party.

I dont recall either of the last two elections being landslides.

If you think there wont be some erosion of the voting block due to his misteps, you are deceiving yourself.

Why would they? Canadians (for the most part) speak English and are white.

Your so correct MIchael Savage will have some sort of twist to this. This investigation will be a boon for him and he will milk it for all its worth.

Not only that, but the President himself recklessly ran over some guy with his bike.

Or maybe it was outed Valerie Plame. I forget. Which old scandal to we move to once this one doesn't work out?
