The names and faces of convicted sex offenders are to be displayed on billboards along main roads in Mississippi.
State authorities hope to have as many as 100 boards ready by the summer, showing images of sex offenders who are in prison, particularly those who preyed on minors. The signs will include details of their convictions.
Local official Don Taylor said the adverts were not designed to shame or further penalise offenders, but to combat the state's "social pathologies". But civil liberties groups said they were a waste of money, as convicted offenders were known to the community.

PING
HA!
That's GREAT!
Laura Ingraham mentioned it this morning.
She's going to talk about it later in the week.
I appreciate the intent, but why would anyone want to look at these cretins' faces day after day while driving back and forth from work and school.
I'm in favor of anything to stop these creeps, but is this really the best use of that money? If they're in jail, how does this help? I'd rather put up billboards of those who are about to be released.
That's good. Also putting up billboards of "most wanted" would be good.
I'd rather put up billboards of those who are about to be released.
I agree.
I'll be surprised if even this law stands
very long. Civil rights and all you know!!
Now, lets redefine homersexuals as sex perverts and put them on the bill boards.
Seems like a waste of tax payers money to me, since they are already in prison. Perhaps they should put the faces of "most wanted" folks on the billboards instead.
I agree with "outing" the offenders, but if you were a victim of one of these perverts, would you want to see their ugly faces all over town?
I think there's way too much vigilante hysteria on this subject most of the time.
The reason you want to see it every day is so if you see him/her near a schoolyard, your first call will be to the police.
bingo
Ok....when is somebody going to post a picture of Slick Willie on a Billboard? It's just a matter of time.
"I think there's way too much vigilante hysteria on this subject most of the time."
I don't agree. We DO need some common sense laws that address the scenario you brought up, though. "No tolerance" and blanket application of laws can make that scenario a reality. Not good.
That said, law can't stop child molestation from happening, they can only arrest and prosecute after it does. The "vigilantes" are the ones who can prevent it, the everyday people who are vigilant (cool tie in, huh) and pay attention to their surroundings.
Did I read it right in that the billboards are going to feature the ones who are in prison? Duh...the dangerous ones are those who are among us today. Post billboards of the ones who have plea bargained serious charges away, those who are wanted by the law and those who have been released as if they had been 'rehabilitated'. Make sure that I know when one of them is living in my area. How about giving me some information that actually helps me protect my kids. The ones in prison right now are only dangerous to each other.
I agree 100%
I agree with you insofar as we're talking about awareness. Too often, though, too little information is misused to create too much of a reaction and brutal, disproportionate treatment of comparatively harmless violators results.
There are too many stories of some poor guy who was convicted of pinching a girl's butt being hounded, abused and labeled a "baby rapist" by the ignorant and hysterical. (No, I didn't just make that up.)
I only hope that those choosing whose images will be posted larger than life are careful to do their homework so the truly dangerous ones are the subject.
