Bush Says He Will Veto Any Bill to Stop UAE Port Deal

WASHINGTON — In a rare display of his veto authority President Bush said Tuesday he will put the kibosh on any legislation that attempts to stop the purchase by a United Arab Emirates-owned firm of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports.

Breaking a gaping silence during the debate of the purchase by Dubai Ports World, Bush said the deal should go forward and won't jeopardize U.S. security.

Officials from the Cabinet departments that participate in the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, which approved the sale last Monday, are appearing in a briefing Tuesday afternoon to defend the process by which CFIUS reviewed and approved the deal.

Officials from the Treasury, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security will participate.

This whole think stinks to high heaven. Frankly, this "deal" jeopardizes our security and should be stopped at all costs.

It sounds like the stuff -- in the media -- has already hit the fan. A veto would be a bad move for him. It would probably be overridden, as both parties are speaking out against this buyout by the Arabs. I too do not understand. Sometimes GWB acts like we're in a war, sometimes he seems to be clueless about it. Part of a war is protecting our borders, ports, etc., from enemy infiltration. When is he going to start fighting this part of the war?

Can anyone explain exactly how this deal would jeopardize U.S. security? It is a port...the same cargo that came in before the new company owns it will come in afterward. The same screening that used to happen will happen...it isn't the owner of the port that runs that...is it...I just think this is a knee jerk reaction for everyone to freak out like this. Unless I am proved wrong. Which is definitely possible.

How do you prevent a UAE employee from feeding Al Qaeda security information to defeat the protections designed to protect us in our ports by giving them the opportunity to know exactly what they need to defeat?

The answer: you can't.

What's the count on an override? Start collecting the votes.

Good for Bush, I agree with him. He outlined the reasons perfectly. A principled moved that takes leadership and guts.

They are not moving the port over there. They are not going to resettle their population over here in the port. It will be run by the same people as it is now (US workers!).

That country already has some of the best security checks at it's ports around the world. Call the US Navy and ask them how they feel about visiting the port (Dubai) in UAE.

People are not looking at this rationally.

This is the FIRST thing important enough, for him to use threat of veto?

In over 5 years?

We should trust Bush. He knows what he's doing.

Like trusting him about securing the border when there's 14 million illegals and more coming in every day? I voted for him 4 times, but I swear there must be 6's on his head.

We need to back the President up without question. I'm sure that he knows what he's doing better than you or I do.

I don't agree with it, but I do understand. He considers Dubai an ally in that region, and we need all the friends we can get, so throw them a bone or two.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.

No facts, just allow themselves to be led along like sheep by the politicians who do NOT have America's interests at heart.

Bush has made some kind of deal with UAE. I don't like this one bit unless they can deliver OBL or the other Terrorist King.

This reduces the credibility of all his blah blah blah about how serious he is about protecting us. (this & illegal immigrantion). Plus, it gives the Dems a needless golden opportunity to look tough on National security.

Put me in the "disgusted with him" column.

Right or wrong, if he knows the veto will be overridden, he'd be wise not to issue it.

Right or wrong.

I want the facts on this to develop for another 48 hours or so until I am sure.

Speculation on my part.
