That plug-in thing kind of aggravates me. If you could just get to work and home on a battery charge, why bother with gas?

A gallon of gasoline has about 37 kilowatt hours of energy, or about $3.70 at $0.10/kWh for electricity. I don't know what the relative efficiencies of gasoline engines vs. electric motors are. Also you might be able to get a lower price on electricity if you charge at night because electric usage is lowest at night.

Problem is that they've spent millions of dollars pushing the "don't need to plug in" theme. It'll be hard for them to offer now the negative they have marketed for years.

I want a plug in that'll give me a choice of how to best use the options. I'm retired and most of my trips are under 30 miles round trip. Why should I have to use ANY gas until I'm ready to take a longer trip. A choice makes sense but I guess that'd be asking too much. They think we're all too stupid to be offered a choice I guess.

That idea occurred to lots of people. There is a popular internet newsgroup of people who have been adding batteries to their Toyotas & plugging them in at night. The electric is alot cheaper than the gasoline. Such is the standard in different countries like Japan.

The greens & the EPA have their panties in a bunch over this. They have tried many ways to stop it. They are upset because it means than coal gets burned to power the cars.

Perhaps having one vehicle that can handle both the short daily commute and the longer weekend trips to see grandma, maybe?

The kilowatt-hours to recharge would probably dent your wallet more than gasoline.

So you could use the vehicle for MORE than just around town driving. Around town you don't use much gas at all, but if you go on a long trip, you use the juice as long as it lasts, then the gas kicks in for the long haul.

I'm looking forward to being able to get a Plug In Hybrid MINI-VAN!! I love my van because it is very versatile, and I like the thought of being able to drive around town without spewing crap into the air.

I'm not looking to save the world, but if I can help with something I gotta have anyway, why not? I'm also not looking for a hundred miles to the gallon. I get about 20 now, so 30 looks good to me!
