Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a man in perpetual motion, flew to South Carolina on Jan. 16. His stops included a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and speeches to local Republican groups. But one of his most important events was not on the public schedule -- a 5 p.m. meeting at a Spartanburg hotel with loyalists to President Bush.
A dozen or so people were in attendance. At least two were among Bush's major national fundraisers. Virtually all had been on Bush's side in the bitter 2000 South Carolina primary that badly damaged McCain's chances of winning the presidential nomination and scarred the relationship between the two men and their rival political camps. McCain was there to woo them.

He won't win over this Bush loyalist. Never ever in a million years.
If it comes down to that, I think it will be the first time a third party candidate carries an election.
Boy, the media does love their McCain don't they? They just don't seem to realize that no one else does.
And I will do everything I can to help him win the Presidency if nominated.
EXCELLENT! My feelings 100%. I pray your wise words can change many Republican minds by 2008. I wish I could think of one good democrat that is worth my vote.
Tell us how you really feel. :^)
Who would that candidate happen to be?
My 10-year-old brother.
Why don't we comprise our own list instead of yapping constantly about the list the enemedia is pushing.
Rep. Mike Pence, IN
Sen. Jeff Sessions, AL
Sen. Tom Coburn, OK
Sen. James Inhofe, OK
I think in three years even the media will grow tired of McCain. They'll create some new maverick.
Inhofe is a loser. Anyway, I hate McCain as much as anybody, although I am inclined to support him this time around in the absence of a great candidate. The reality is that W has been a total failure to the cause of less government. If McCain can whip some new spending sensibility into the government, then let him by the candidate.
McCain is the candidate of big media. The last time they successfully pulled off stealing a nomination was in 1940 when the media nominated Wendall Wilkie. HE WAS A REGISTERED DEMOCRAT who got the Republican nomination. The media wanted him and the Republican party gave him the nomination because they were told they needed two FDR's in the race.
McCain is a LIBERAL! In fact he's an out and out leftie. He will destroy the Reagan Republican Party.
I will do everything I can to prevent him from getting the nomination.
And I will do everything I can to help him win the Presidency if nominated.
Agreed, and very brave posting the second line here.
Nope, would vote third party,Constitution Party most likely,no vote is wasted, might stir the pot a bit.
The way I see things right now,Conservatives are winning big,a McCain nomination by the Republican Party would create two weak parties.
The Republican Party leadership has a decision to make,You are either with us or against us.
I understand how you feel. I have to admit, I share your and everyone else's reservation about him. He is still better thank Hillary, Gore, Kerry. Outside of Zell Miller, I can NOT think of one deserving democrat to run this country. Any suggestions?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
"I'll be sitting having a cup of coffee and the phone will ring and it will be McCain," said Charles "Chuck" Yob, Michigan's GOP national committeeman. He described the senator as "a lot more conservative than a lot of conservatives give him credit for."
Next the GOP National Committee will be telling us that McCain is pro life.
National Right to Life responds.
McCain is an unstable egotist. I wouldn't trust him with a flyswatter.
Maybe Lieberman. But you're right the Dem party is out of ideas and out of people.
Make no mistake, in his heart of hearts McCain is as liberal as Ted Kennedy.
Political sycophants who'll work for anyone.
I'm with you, assuming Hillary! is the nominee on the other side, or womeone as bad, which is almost all of them. I suppose there is a slim, slim chance the dims will nominate a true American patriot who will put this country's interests and safety first, but I doubt it.
