Dallas man's flags don't fly with veterans: Mexican banner sits above Old Glory to protest Iraq war
Dallas Morning News ^ | February 3, 2006 | ALLEN HOUSTON

The U.S. and Mexican flags dancing with the wind in Louis Garza's front yard have brewed up bitter resentment in his East Dallas neighborhood.

Louis Garza initially flew a much larger Mexican flag above the Stars and Stripes outside his Dallas home. A friend begged him to take it down, and he replaced it with a smaller Mexican flag that flies atop his pole in protest of the war in Iraq.

Perched atop a more than 20-foot pole and seen from blocks away, the green, white and red Mexican flag snaps in the brisk breeze. The red, white and blue American flag flies beneath – and there lies the problem.

Sitting on a bar stool surrounded by a few veterans at White Rock VFW Post 6796, Cecil Caddel, a Korean War veteran and Mr. Garza's neighbor, spoke about the U.S. flag being flown below another flag.

"It irritates the hell out of me," Mr. Caddel said. "We didn't go to war to fly a Mexican flag over our flag."

The flag clash has tapped into deep-rooted passions and Mr. Garza's right as a U.S. citizen to use the Stars and Stripes to protest the war in Iraq and support his Mexican heritage.

Mr. Garza, a 71-year-old Brownsville native, recently answered the door to his eclectic home wearing an Alan Jackson T-shirt, mirrored sunglasses and a black cowboy hat.

Two pianos and more than a dozen guitars fill the small house he has lived in for 40 years.

A bust of Abraham Lincoln sits prominently on a bookcase.

His parents came from Jimenez, Mexico, across the border from Brownsville. Mr. Garza said his mother swam the river at Matamoros so she could give birth to him on American soil.

"She wanted the best for me and all this country had to...

Lol, you just keep digging yourself deeper. I'd love to know what you think you read or saw that led you to believe that I ride a Japanese anything. That's a Harley Davidson you see pictured. Look again and you'll see the unmistakable UC Evo engine there.

Look, you're trying to impose your OPINION onto the OPINIONS of others. Not going to fly.

People have a right to thier OPINIONS. Opinions don't determine citizenship but OPINIONS do determine how voters vote and for what and what they campaign to achieve by way of voting later.

Thus, your OPINIONS are what they are, mine are what mine are.

Many American citizens have lost their lives to defend and protect our country and it is a dishonorable and disrespectful act that this man who is gifted with a miracle of citizenship by way of manipulation and his mother's bad ethics (stealing into another country is not an indication of respectable ethics, in my view), that this man is suffering in self pity and denigrating the American flag by subjecting it to another country's superiority...it's entirely insulting to the sacrifice, pain and suffering of countless Americans.

It's also agains the law but this crusty ingrate of a man does not seem to even respect those either, so, let him live out his life in a country he denigrates while advertising and adulating a country who has not come to his assistance, nor his mother's. If Mexico is grand to this man, then let him go back there.

He does not deserve to own that American flag. However, it's due to the graciousness of the country and our generosity of a representational government that this man has a flag and a house by which to fly it, in subservience to a country who hasn't offered him much but a bad set of ethics and a lot of self pity.

I'll repeat myself one more time. You vote your way, and I'll vote mine. One of our views will prevail in the Republican party, and hopefully the nation.

He illustrates the fifth column we import with anchor babies.

You only inappropriately aggrandize a pathetic, incoherent loser in applying weighty terms like "fifth columnist". With the little flag now his display just looks stupid. His explanation is stupid. Senile even. He's a fool of no account. Let the old fart be.

"Asshole or moron....that's my choice."

There's a third choice:

Both!

Probably. I've never personally understood the relevance of having hate crimes anyway; anyone who kills somebody etc. has hate in their heart. All hate crimes laws do is put more value on a certain type of person's life. Stupid.

Normally, I would absolutely agree with you, but I think half of our problems right now are caused by us tolerating what shouldn't be tolerated. This goes back to the whole wiretapping thing too. We could just not do it at all and have no question of the purity of freedom of speech (even though it doesn't go against it anyway), but we're just screwing ourselves if we don't do it.
