With the 2008 presidential election less than three years away, more than a few members of President Bush's campaign team have begun to migrate to the current GOP frontrunner, Sen. John McCain.
According to Newsweek magazine, Mark McKinnon, Bush's longtime media adviser, has told the president he's ready to leap aboard McCain's "Straight Talk Express," unless brother Jeb or Condoleezza Rice change their minds and get into the race.
Among Bush fundraisers, the biggest catch, says Newsweek, is Tom Loeffler, a former congressman from San Antonio, who is a Bush-family loyalist and helped build Bush's money machine in 2000.
Ron Weiser, who was Bush's finance chairman in Michigan in 2000, has also joined McCain.
However, in a bizarre observation considering the Arizona maverick's frontrunner status, McKinnon told Newsweek: "I'd rather lose with McCain than win with somebody else."
Other presidential hopefuls scouting for campaign talent include Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist, Virginia Sen. George Allen and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Notably absent from the competition: former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was leading McCain in most GOP presidential preference polls last year - but has done little to advance a presidential bid lately.
If the Republican elites put up McCain without listening to the base, and Hillary wins, blame the Republican elites, not me.
Each one of the "Republican elites" gets the same number of primary ballots as yourself.
If you don't vote to defeat Hillary and she becomes president, I'll blame you.
"Democrats are the only reason to vote for Republicans." - Thomas Sowell
We don't have a Presidential primary in my state. The elites pick the candidate.
Sometimes our team never misses an opportunity to miss an oportunity. I'd have to hold my nose to vote for McCain.
I don't think Jeb is the man. I think the country probably would say: "Enough is enough". After George H. W. Bush as VEEP and Prez for 12 years and G.W. another 8 totaling 20 years; the country might be getting a little "Bush fatigued".
RUN, CONDI; RUN!!
A mormon is going to do real well in the south..
When you poll nationally i think roughly 20% of this country states flat out they will not vote for a mormon candidate under any cirumstances. Jews and catholics are like 3-5%.
Then don't come back on FR for the next eight years carping about her presidency.
Bump.
We did that from 1992 to 2000; no thanks.
Republicans who realize what's at stake won't stay home.
You better believe one thing: if the Democrats EVER get power back, they're not going to EVER give it up, so that "let's teach the GOP a lesson" agenda of the extreme right wing sucks.
Exactly.
If this is true the Republican Party has lost its way. The man is not fit to be President.
Enjoy Hillary.
This is a hard thing to think about.
I just don't want RINOs anywhere anymore, I want conservatives, and yet, I can't stand the thought of some Clinton back in the WH.
It's a problem to be sure, and I for one do not know what the answer is at this time. I don't think I could vote for McCain, and I cannot vote for Mitt. I am praying for a better choice. Who knows.
An excellent post.
Rice is NOT running. I wish people would stop talking about it.
I don't think McCain can win the primaries.
How do you feel about Haley Barbour?
"However, in a bizarre observation considering the Arizona maverick's frontrunner status, McKinnon told Newsweek: "I'd rather lose with McCain than win with somebody else." "
So be it.
If Dole ran again I would vote for him. I will never vote for that maniac McCain.
This is not good news.
McCain is not mentally balanced. He gives the perception of being out of touch.
The fact he is paying for top talent and getting top tallent is not good. Then again it may be the low level talent so it does not matter.
>>Rice is NOT running. I wish people would stop talking about it.<<
I can dream!
