LIVE THREAD: SJC hearing on the NSA surveilance program - C-span 1; 9:30 am EST

Posted on 02/06/2006 6:08:53 AM PST by ken5050

Good Monday morning, once again, fellow political jinkies. The NFL season may be over, but the political season inside the Beltway is 24/7/365. So join us, if you can, as those wacky Dems on the Senate Judiciary committee reprise their pitiful efforts to once again smear President Bush and score political points..

Here's a new spin I heard at the 11:00 news break on the radio: Some Democrats are complaining the Bush administration tricked them into taking the enemies side.

What part of - You're either with us or against us - did they not understand?

Biden: I haven't heard NSA say to intel cmte that we're binding ourselves (?) under 12333 as well as other statutes. Can you assure us that has been done?

Are you confident that you know the detail with which program is being conducted; that you personally can assure us that only AQ or terrorists calling Americans are being wiretapped?

Gonazles: No. But we have safeguards in place that what the president has authorized is that procedures are being followed.

Biden: This is why the Intel Committee needs absolute guarnteed assurance that no American is being wiretapped unless they are in contact with AQ. (Finger pointing and highly agitated)

He wants the media to draw inference.

And for the NYT to print it.

Biden wants "absolute guarantee" no American citizen is being subjected to monitoring under penalty of perjury...

Trying to lay a trap to get Gonzales and others...

Absolutely. Biden already knows the answer, and he wants the Intelligence committee to put people under oath to swear against it, or leak that it is happening. Purjury trap, all the way.

Biden is not smart enough to trap someone. These Senators are not cream of the crop lawyers. They are simply reading ideas someone handed them.

Biden was pointing his finger directly at AG Gonzalez. I would have loved to grab that finger and twisted it every way but loose.

Kyl: From initial concerns about program itself now we're hearing new concerns.

I doubt anyone would be upset with this program if polled today. A little humility is called for on this committee before we accuse the president of a crime.

If our hearings with Alito and Roberts demonstrated anything it's that there are smart lawyers in Washington besides those who sit on this committee. LOL

I believe General Hayden has indicated that they sometimes pick up things that don't qualify and they "minimize" them. Biden will get no such assurance.

Senator Feingold is showing his butt already and the hearing has just begun.

Boggles my mind why people would be surprised Feingold is acting like he is. He voted against the Patriot Act of 2001, and voted against extending it 5 more weeks.

He's as repugnant as that smarmy Harry Reid.

This is idiotic on the part of Biden. There is NO standard required by criminal or national security investigations that imposes ABSOLUTE PERFECTION on the part of an investigator. Reasonable suspician, or even proboble cause are forms of good faith belief; they are not forms of omniscience, which the 4th Amendment never requires.
