LIVE THREAD: SJC hearing on the NSA surveilance program - C-span 1; 9:30 am EST

Posted on 02/06/2006 6:08:53 AM PST by ken5050

Good Monday morning, once again, fellow political jinkies. The NFL season may be over, but the political season inside the Beltway is 24/7/365. So join us, if you can, as those wacky Dems on the Senate Judiciary committee reprise their pitiful efforts to once again smear President Bush and score political points..

The Leahy sound bites have already made the round on MSNBC.

THE TONE OF THE HEARINGS [John Podhoretz]

Very interesting. Teddy Kennedy is expressing his view that Gonzales's case in favor of the program is "strong" but that there's a lot of opinion to the contrary. Kennedy is also expressing his concern that people working for the NSA and even the phone companies might be exposed to lawsuits and other legal action if the administration's opinion does not hold sway in the courts. What I'm saying is...this might actually be a useful hearing. Arlen Specter seems to think that it's his place to attack, the Democrats may be properly fearful of being too aggressive and are instead using the hearing as an open debate on the complicated question of how to interpret intelligence-activity legislation.

"Leahy: Does the law let the president authorize the opening of USA mail? "

I think was just trying to help the terrorists find an alternative means of communication. Of course the AG does not want to talk in open hearings about what means of communication are being monitored. That being said, it appears that the AG was trying to say first class mail is not part of this program.

Fine, but we could do without the negativity. How about being positive when they do well just as equally as you are negative about them? There is enough negativity from the opposition.

Her brother was the pilot of the plane that went into the Pentagon. She is a fabulous spokeswoman for fighting this war.

AN INTERESTING CONTRAST [JPod]
As Alberto Gonzales tries to explain to the Senate Judiciary Committee why it might be necessary to take extraordinary measures to subdue Al Qaeda, the "20th hijacker," Zacarias Moussaoui, appeared in court for jury selection in his trial. He stood up, said, "I am Al Qaeda," announced he didn't want his lawyers to represent him because they were Americans, and had to be escorted from the courtroom. Draw your own conclusions.

Debra Burlingame is making our case for us. She's fabulous!!

DEbra: The fact that this program has been disclosed publicly has hurt us. We're at war. The enemy is here. I urge Congress to do what's right.

What I find interesting is the FACT this is still an on-going program, no matter how damaged it has become because of this unneeded hoopla. Do these senators really think that the AG is going to spill all the beans in a public hearing?

I feel sorry for the witnesses who come before this bunch of buffoons. I mean this is dangerous for the people who run the program and for the american people. They have to be careful not to spill any beans that haven't already been splattered on the wall by the democratic traitors.

Podhoretz is buying this "reasonable Kennedy" facade?? C'mon! I posted this earlier:

"Kennedy is a drunk, but he can read when he's sober. He knows what a public beating he took in the last two weeks during Alito. He's going to let some other kook carry the Kos water on this go-round."

I would love to see a Republican Senator show a replay of the 9/11 attacks.

Just for emphasis.

The thing I like about Debra Burlingame is that she doesn't (like Cindy Shaheen) abuse her moral authority as a relative of a victim of a war. She presents rational arguments, both on TV and her opinion peices in places like the NY POst and the Wall Street Journal.
