In an especially contentious exchange on this evening's Hannity and Colmes (Friday February 3, 2006), cantankerous cartoonist Ted Rall, a guest on the program, unbelievably declared, "We do not owe our liberties to the military." The topic was the recent Washington Post cartoon by Tom Toles that has outraged many. The cartoon prompted a letter to the editor (linked at Michelle Malkin) from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who tagged the the work as "beyond tasteless." Needless to say, Rall (who himself has created bigoted trash in the past) defended Toles' cruel piece. Here's the relevant exchange (audiotape on file, emphasis mine):
SEAN HANNITY: Here's what you're missing. The reason that you have the right to be mean, and you were mean to this guy [killed in Afghanistan, former NFL star Pat] Tillman, who gave up a football contract to save his country. The reason you have the right to be mean in your cartoons, and Toles has a right to mean and insensitive in his cartoons, is because of people like this (Sean holds up the WaPo cartoon) that literally put their lives on the line so you have the right for free expression. And you insult them and use them as props so you can make your left-wing political points.
RALL: Sean, you could not possibly be more wrong about the nature of this country. We do not owe our liberties to the military. We owe them to the Constitution. We have civilian rule in the United States --
HANNITY: The military preserves the Constitution. They put their lives on the line so that you have free speech. You do owe them.
RALL: The military doesn't give us free speech.
HANNITY: Yes, they do.
RALL: Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers gave us free speech.
HANNITY: No. Because if they don't defend that Constitution, you don't have the right to be so wrong in your cartoons!
"We do not owe our liberties to our military"?? I'm sure George Washington would have had a few things to say about that, not to mention the generations of heroic young men who fought and died to protect and defend our precious liberties.
It was simply another pathetic display by Ted Rall. How ungrateful this man is. What a disgrace.
By the way, if Rall's comments weren't sad enough, co-host Alan Colmes claimed that the Joint Chiefs' letter to the Washington Post was "intimidating" and that there was a "chill of intimidation that goes right down the spine of the First Amendment." Puh-leeze, Alan.
Regular air service or military flight and HANO drop?
You have to learn that getting all hot and bothered about these guys is not worth the effort. Besides it addles your brain, makes your reponses less effective, and it also ruins your aim.
Breath ... partially exhale, and squeeze.
Amen to that. Id love to see some of these smucks face to face with some terrorists who would try to kill them simply because they are americans.
I guess Rall forgot (or, more likely, doesn't want to acknowledge) Dwight David Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Zachary Taylor, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, George H.W. Bush, Rutherford B. Hayes, Ulysseys S. Grant, (a bad President but a good general) Andrew Jackson, etc...
The HANO would be fine, thank you.
"It Is The Soldier" was authored by Charles Michael Province
It reminded me of something John Hawkins, the blogger behind RightWingNews.com, said about Ted Rall in 2002. Rall always gets on his annual list of the twenty most annoying liberals, and Hawkins, pointing to a time when Rall said he was a Marxist, said that if you locked a fatherless fourteen-year-old in a room with nothing but a black magic marker and a copy of "The Communist Manifesto," you'd get the same kind of junk that Rall produces every time he drawsa a cartoon.
One of these days I'm going to write his publisher and say something like: "Dear Sirs, for the past few years you have published the cartoons of Ted Rall. Why?"
This is what the Muslims preach. We're better than they are. We leave the "blowing up things" part to SEALs, Rangers, et al., instead of strapping bombs to our kids.
Or make it HALO or HANO at the crews discretion. The thought of this POS begging for silk from our servicemen warms the cockles of my heart.
Thanks. It's just soooo tough to stay calm in the face of such stupidity.
Don't forget to squeeze between the heartbeats.
One shot - One kill.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I'd be glad to pack the chute.
You're supposed to take the irons out?
Pack him a lunch and tell him it's his last meal, LOL.
Just a conspiracy theory.
I saw this, and it was infuriating. Rall was bawling and whining like a 4-yr old while Hannity chewed him out. Too bad Hannity isn't a little smarter, so he could have asked colmes, "Don't the JCOS have the 1st Amendment right to write a letter complaining about this cartoon?" I was also disappointed when Hannity later made excuses for the cop who gunned down the airman in CA.
He has never, ever backed down from his open hatred of the armed services, he admits it, and does not spin it.
I just wish the media (ha ha ha ha ha) would be honest and let him say it.
I hate the fact that his comments on the military are always edited out, he doesn't pretend or spin or lie, he hates the armed services and shows contempt for them, he has never tried to play games with it ala john kerry or hillary clinton.
Yet when he says those beliefs, its the only beliefs, the media leaves out.
