IBM today announced free software and educational resources to help developers in Russia build and deploy innovative applications based on open standards and open source.
Tapping into the booming software development market in Russia, IBM is giving software developers, architects and students free access to software and hundreds of new tools and technical and educational resources that will enable them to more easily build open standards-based applications.
With a few clicks of a mouse, developers can download free versions of IBM middleware, IBM WebSphere Application Server Community Edition and IBM DB2 Universal Database Express-C, as well as access trial code, tutorials, technical forums, emerging technologies and blogs where IBM technical experts share their tips and expertise.

I don't want it going to Russia, China, Cuba, Iran, etc, at all. But if it does go at all, it needs to carefully counted, trackable, limited, and at an extreme cost to them. Giving it away for free is absurd.
Support will continue to be a big biz. Open source doesn't mean that magically all operational difficulties get fixed.
VMWare's main competition for this has been Virtuozzo and Mircrosoft Virtual Server, both proprietary. Xen isn't quite there yet. IBM's DB2 teaser release is in response to both Microsoft's and Oracle's teaser versions of their latest software, all are efforts to win over developers by giving them free systems they can play with, but that can't really support a full enterprise (free DB2 is limited to 2-way SMP and 4 GB RAM). It also gets small companies that can run on small hardware into their system, so those companies will buy licenses when they grow.

A precarious position we've been put in by open source proponents like the FSF. You do know the freeware freaks like Richard Stallman still aren't satisfied with the DB2 givaway, of course. They want the source code, and a right to modify it, rename it, resell it, and not give IBM anything back if they want to. And so far, IBM and others are slowly but fully cooperating.
I've made it clear I don't want anything going there. Others, want everything going there, completely free of charge. Who do you side with? So far, it looks like those that want everything going there, free of charge.
So because you cant find a single time I said I was against closed source software youre re wording the same inane 'thought'... You know wagging your finger and repeating a lie does not make it true..

No, I'm saying that if you think giving away software for free is similar to treason (which is the moral position you take), then it is hypocrisy of the greatest degree to look any better on those who sell it (which is another position you take).

As you are so fond of saying Linux is *NOT* us born technology, and anything that does go into the kernel is put in there by someone who is not an American citizen. So how is Linux going to Russia a transfer of US technology

Keep in mind that our resident troll thinks otherwise. Thus, I went to show that if the only difference was that IBM sold their code instead of releasing it as open-source, it is probable that GE would have a different take on the transaction.

You have never been correct on a single post you have made, that I recall. I clearly indicated, starting with post #1, that I believe IBM should be fined, for selling technology to Russia, just like they were before Clinton changed the law.
So to get things straight here you are withdrawing youre claim that I am anti-Closed source? and you have now moved onto a new claim?
