Dean's Bush bash plays mainly to the true believers

Wearing a white Bush-Cheney '04 T-shirt, Jeff Hubbard was distinctly in the minority Tuesday night when Howard Dean popped into a pizza restaurant to roast President Bush before the State of the Union speech.

Hubbard, 24, was surrounded by scores of true believers, the few remaining North Carolina Democrats who still think that Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, can help the party. And Hubbard couldn't have been happier.

"I love Howard Dean. I had to see him," he said. "You have to like the man. He's done more for the Republican Party than anybody since Eisenhower."

It's true that Dean says and does goofy things. He may never live down that ridiculous scream he let out two years ago after getting whipped by John Kerry and John Edwards in the Iowa presidential caucus.

It's true that he's an energetic, charismatic speaker. He captivated the room for the 20 minutes he spent criticizing Republicans, and he hit all the right liberal touchstones.

It's also true that there's a whole lot more people like Hubbard in North Carolina than there are those who think like Dean.

Avoiding the party leader

You would think that Democratic honchos in the state might want to be seen with the leader of the national Democratic Party. But a funny thing happened on the way to Dean's Bush bash. Apparently, the state's top elected Democrats would rather be caught cross-dressing in church than be seen with Howard Dean.

Now now, Libers have plenty of beliefs, let's consider some of them:

• The belief that socialism works
• The belief in global warming
• The belief that traditional marriages are wrong
• The belief that blacks cannot do anything for themselves, and must rely on government handouts
• The belief that market forces cannot control the prices of things
• The belief that the Constitution has a 'seperation of church and state' clause
• The belief that guns hurt people
• The belief that gun control laws will make lawbreakers not have guns

....we could be here all day talking about liberal beliefs. It's amazing how much faith those libers truly have

I mean really look at that picture how pathetic is it that the head of the DNC in one of the biggest nights of the year for having a chance at a national audience for rebuttal is sitting in a pizza restuarant in a red state surrounded by what 20 people? Half of them were probably there for the free beer and pizza and the other half were probably like the guy in the article they just wanted to see the feak show up close and maybe thank him for being such a moonbat whacko.

Karl Rove couldn't have planned this event any better. Go Howard go.

Gov. Mike Easley likes to golf and spend time at the coast, so maybe he wasn't even in town. Jim Black, the embattled speaker of the House, might have been meeting with his lawyers. Avoiding jail has to be a higher priority than publicly meeting with your party's leader.

And the roster of Democrats who hope to succeed Easley - Attorney General Roy Cooper, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and Treasurer Richard Moore - surely know better than to associate themselves with the national party.

If you want to win a state race as a Democrat, you run away from the national party. Unless you live in Durham or Chapel Hill.
