PARIS, Feb 2, 2006 (AFP) - France's respected daily newspaper Le Monde joined a European press campaign for freedom of expression Thursday with a front-page cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed and an editorial defending the right to ridicule religions.
The drawing by the paper's long-time cartoonist Plantu featured a head of the prophet made up of the words "I must not draw Mohammed" written repeatedly in long-hand.
"Religions are systems of thought, constructions of the spirit, beliefs which are to be respected certainly, but also freely analysed, criticised and even turned to ridicule," Le Monde said.
"A Muslim may well be shocked by a picture of Mohammed, especially an ill-intentioned one. But a democracy cannot start policing people's opinions, except by trampling the rights of man underfoot," it said.
Plantu told the newspaper that cartoonists and other humourists find it increasingly hard to touch on religion in their work.
"People do not understand to what point -- outside the Catholic Church which we can attack and which is, one has to say, very lenient -- it has become impossible to criticise religious things," he said.
HOW AMERICA WILL FALL TO ISLAM
By J. Grant Swank, Jr.
Schools will instruct pupils on the "religion of peace," Islam. Now Islamic speakers are invited into school systems to teach faculty and principals about the goodness of Islam.

Same deal, as far as rights are concerned. If a group wants to receive a message that is generally offensive, they should ensure the distribution is restricted to that group. Why is this difficult to understand? Blasphemy is similar to pornography. Le Monde would not put porn in their newspaper (er, maybe they do, but then that is equally wrong), why do they put blasphemy in it?
The fact that France is secular points to the obligation of its government to protect the rights of all, all the same. One solution I would applaud, by the way, is for France to be not secular, and let the Catholic Church decide what cartoons are or are not appropriate.
As a Christian, I am outraged -- well, concerned is more the word, -- with any violation to human dignity.

I assume that you mean they do NOT want to receive the message. Equating blasphemy to porn.....oh I won't to go there :-)

If you are a Christian then surely you see that this is a false religion and as such is undeserving of any such outrage. The fact of the matter is the greatest hope for these people is Jesus. But, a muslim turning away from islam is akin to a hooker leaving her pimp. He was making money off her and how dare she leave and he kills her. Such it is for islam. A muslim turning away from the "faith" is killed. Any whoever is offered the chance to convert and refuses is killed. I have links for these claims if you so desire. So it goes for the religion of peace.
No, I mean what I wrote. It is incumbent on those who care for blasphemy to ensure that they receive their Le Monde just like they receive porn, by mail in a brown wrapper -- not at kiosks, in supermarkets or in receptionist's lounges.
It is a Christian duty to respect man's dignity and by doing so lead one to Christ. A debate about how Islam is a false religion would be a good thing. About time someone in Denmark or France tried that. Stupid cartoons, however, only hinder that debate, as they are profoundly non-Christian.
Was I not clear? If we, -- the Christian West collectively, -- abrogate our Christian responsibilities, more innocents will be slaughtered and we'll still lose the war.
Good point. Look at the Democrats.
>> the Catholic Church which we can attack <<
I'll take that as a compliment, a Badge of Honor.

How many times have you seen jews and chistians belittled in all types of media? How many times have you seen said jews and christians get on a bus with exlosives strapped to them and blow up people because of it? That is the point, you haven't! The fact of the matter is if you disagree with islam they will use whatever means nessesary to either intimidate you into submission or if that doesn't work, kill you. Just ask Salman Rushdie. Europe is in a struggle for it's very survival. They have a large muslim population that won't assimilate and this is their way of defying them. Just look at the riots in France, it was three days before any news outlet identified the participants as muslims. And only then Fox and I never heard them use the term again. I knew when I first saw it what was going on. Same thing in Australia, the media poytrayed it as race riots. What they failed to mention is that it is common for muslims to gang rape Australian women. It would make me want to fight, too. So, if this is the only way for these Europeans to defy the muslims, I say more power to them. Whether you think it's right or not is something you and I will have to agree to disagree on.
Thanks so much for the ping to the pic. I was wanting to see it. :-)
It didn't take the frenchies long to surrender. I heard the editor got fired.
I would read "Je ne dois pas dessiner Mahomet" as "I must not draw Mohammed."
Are you joking? Islam is a hateful cult that tries to keep it's followers stupid and full of anger and murder. Concerned? They can't even take a joke without wanting to kill someone!
Exactly. They can dish it out, but they can't take it.
You must accept us. Okay for us to trash you, though. Deal?
This will drag the EU into the fray on the side of the good guys.
The terrorists are losing, even in France. They're being laughed at.
I have seen Christians "belittled in all types of media". Don't recall about the Jews. I have not seen Jewish or Christians suicide bombers, no. I understand that we have every right to be angry at Islam, and that they don't play by the same rules. But to me, as a Christian, this is irrelevant to how I should treat them.
Like I said in my first post here: it would be fine to debate, deport, or fight a crusade against the Muslim world. It would be wrong, however, to deny their religion the same protection we rightly demand, -- and often not get, -- for our own. The secular leftist media, here or in France is NOT our ally, as Le Monde very clearly admitted.
and?
If you are in the US you need to read this article.
