The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.
Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."
The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.
George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."
Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.
Films are part of the pop culture, pop culture is not art. Pop culture is the absence of art.
Agreed. HOSTAGE is a really good view...I've seen it now about five times and will watch it again soon. It's a complex, and cinematographically, dark film so it's worthwhile to watch the film several times (at least twice) to get most of what's in it.
Good film, very good film (however violent, which it is, not for the young ones). There are child actors in it who do a great job, by the way, but there are several mortal gunshot scenes and other very violent moments so I would not suggest HOSTAGE for anyone too young, or even young teens.
Cinnema isn't Art? Citizen Kane, Vertigo and The Godfather isn't Art? Please.
Good point. I've done that myself.
pandering...
At this point I'm just trying to be a good father. It ain't easy, But I must tell
you there are magic moments that make it all worth while. And this comes from a guy who was dead set against having kids. Once I was trapped, I decide to make the best of it. I'd say if you have a special lady Go for it. It's why we are here.
Ahhhh - good ole common ground. I totally agree with you, and frankly, that sad fact of liberal life knots my panties more then the other subject we were discussing.
And the Oscar for "Most revolting homo propaganda" goes to: "Buttcrack Mountin!"
See my latest version, end of the thread at this hour...
No, cinema is not art. There may have been some good films, but it is not art.
Completely false. Shaeskpeare and Dickens were also pop culture. So was Mozart. Film was the primary artform of the last century.
Your kids' weddings will be one of those magic moments. (I just went through two of those.)
Apache2, are you sure RightWing isn't that troll Willie?
I'll make an easy prediction: These year's Oscar broadcast will have the lowest ratings ever due to lack of interest.
Of course - if Jon Stewart is smart - and I think he is - some sort of bogus otential controversy will be stirred up to pique interest.
Is this the first time in history a gay porn film has been nominated for a 'Best Picture' oscar?
Exactly, in Hollywood their are too major concerns: what you where at an award (how good you think you look) and running their big mouths on subjects they know nothing about.
