I have often lamented the climacteric that befell our state in 1974 with the election of Gov. Jerry Brown and the introduction of a radical and retrograde ideology. He called it his =93era of limits.=94 It was punctuated with such new age nonsense as the mantra =93small is beautiful.=94 I think it can best be described as the na=EFve notion that if we stopped building things, people would stop coming. So we stopped building highways; we stopped building water projects; we stopped building houses and electricity plants. And people came anyway. And now we=92re dealing with the result. That ideology permeated two Democratic and two Republican administrations, and I am very glad to see this administration breaking from this folly. Hey look, like most of California, we are not that impressed with Mr. McClintock and his inability to self market throughout the state.

Many like me figured he jumped the shark with the last Gov.'s race.

Bottom line, if the turkey was that good he would have more than twenty or so people discussing him in this thread on what is a major conservative site (which should be his base).

He's weak, but may run for what ever office he wishes.

Herr Randolph had to reach back to post that despicable comparison. He certainly owes Sen. McClintock a very LARGE apology. But as we've seen with all the TM haters, they're no better that their DU primordial ooze brethren, and employ the same Colleen Rowley standards of ethics.

Yes. But, he is one of very few elected officials in CA who actually promote the interests of free people, such as lower taxes, smaller government, local control, and property rights.

Yes. You didn't know this all the time you spent on this board parroting criticisms of his campaign for Governor in the recall-Davis election?

Do all CA elected positions at this time have term limits?

In CA statewide offices, yes, except for judges who are simply reconfirmed (not elected) every 12 years. In federal elected positions, no.

I suspected the term limit issue hit all state offices of higher ranking, just wanted to verify it still existed because it wasn't impossible that liberals could have passed a recall of that law recently.

I received a letter from Senator Tom McClintock today, addressed to Members of the California Republican Party.


January 27, 2006

Our party is facing some very serious issues as we enter this election year.

The Democrats continue to outperform Republicans in crucial swing precincts, and the GOP has yet to match the manpower that unions provide Democrats on Election Day.

Despite the valiant efforts of many dedicated Republican volunteers across the state, the November special election showed us that our party's grass roots network is almost non-existent in many counties, while the Democrats raised their turnout higher than most predictions.

Our party's primary focus must be to rebuild out Get Out The Vote infrastructure, recognizing that our ability to compete in November is tied directly to our willingness to build this grass roots army now.

That's why, when I hear rumors that some delegates are planning to use the upcoming Republican Party convention to attack the Governor and his proposals, all I can do is shake my head.

Like many of us, I too have disagreements with some of the Governor's proposals. These differences, however, do not justify the abandonment of our party's responsibility to work tirelessly to reelect this Republican governor and to elect our GOP candidates to statewide and legislative offices.

For this reason, I view any effort to attack Governor Schwarzenegger as an attack on my own candidacy and those of every Republican seeking partisan office in 2006.

The measure of an effective statewide party is not our ability to pass resolutions scolding our own. Rather, it's whether we wisely use the next ten months to organize and train a grass roots army in fifty-eight California counties.

That's why I strongly urge the party to take the following advice for our February convention:

1. Our party has endorsed this governor for re-election. While I am not in favor of pre-primary endorsements for any partisan race, once the endorsement is given, it must not be rescinded. Let's leave this issue alone.

2. Put aside the plans that would cause strife and division among our party and instead focus on those things that unite our party and divide the Democrats.

3. Focus every minute of every hour at this convention on planning to recruit, train and deploy a vast grass roots army that will successfully impact our election results in November.

There is much to do, and precious few months in which to do it. Let us not waste the little time that we have.

Please join me in calling for a productive, united convention that will lead to the Governor's re-election as well as the election of our statewide ticket of talented Republican leaders. And join me by rejecting any misguided effort to divide us by rescinding the party's endorsement of our Governor.

I believe it is critically important to all of our Republican candidates to have an effective, unified party convention that sets the course clearly toward building and equipping our grassroots army to deliver a great Republican victory this November.

I will highlight this is my keynote address during the Saturday luncheron. I look forward to seeing you in San Jose.

When President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, he was for smaller government and cutting taxes. But he discovered that cutting government spending to be more politically difficult than cutting taxes. It was the beginning of a period of long budget deficits.

That's what I'm understanding of Tom McClintock's letter. Not that he is necessarily invoking the "speak no ill of a fellow Republican" rule; but yes, this should also apply.

To understand what's politically feasible and what's principle, and to understand that principle is always important, but to keep eyes on the goal -- that of cutting spending in CA.

Tell that to those who ra and continue to run the CA GOP and did little to support Simon and rejected Tom for an actor who ran as a "fiscal 'conservative'" and delivered little of what he promised but sure delivered debt like we haven't seen since the dems rode roughshod over the state's finances.

The funny thing, now the GUb has chosen to work with them and the debt load will likely quadruple if he has his way.

Some encore borrowing 15 billion to bail out the dems ,, makes ya wonder if that was just a warmup act or ? ;-)

Tom McClintock, the conservative state senator who was the nominee for controller, was also a victim of Parsky. McClintock, a popular conservative thinker and leader, led in all the polls and had the best chance of any Republican to win a statewide office. The RNC had sent Parsky $600,000 to help the down-ticket candidates. Even though McClintock was fighting for his life against a multimillionaire Democratic opponent who was pounding him on TV, Parsky passed him a paltry $100,000 and sent the remainder to moderate candidates with much-dimmer prospects of winning. It's worth noting that McClintock — easily the most-conservative member of the statewide ticket — received more votes than any other GOP statewide candidate, ultimately losing by only 22,000 votes out of almost 6.5 million cast.
