GOP Veteran Seeks To Unseat Feinstein (D-CA)
The Los Angeles Times ^ | January 25, 2006 | Michael Finnegan

Taking on a test that other Republicans have shunned, retired state Sen. Richard Mountjoy said Tuesday that he was entering the race for the GOP nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

A longtime leader of the state Republican Party's conservative wing, Mountjoy had been weighing a Senate run for weeks but said for the first time Tuesday that his decision was "definite."

California Freepers are no doubt familiar with Mountjoy, a fixture in conservative politics. But at 74 y/o, he's even older than Feinstein.

Mountjoy can chuckle all the way to the primary while Feinstein dukes it out with Cindy Sheehan!!!

Yeah right. That district is farther left than the French. It'd take a BIG RINO to win there. I don't even think John McCain would stand a chance...or even Hilary Clinton for that matter.

Good luck though.

Mountjoy is a fine gentleman, but he'd be almost 5 years older than the oldest first-term Senator from California, Sam Hayakawa. He should be enjoying his retirement.

Mountjoy sounds like some British public school type guy (public school in Britain equalling Andover, Groton, St. Pauls, etc in the US). He is better suited for New Jersey. :)

The liberals and gay rights groups had a field day with juvenile razzings of his name "Dick Mountjoy." I wonder if the state GOP wouldn't be better off running someone who hasn't even held public office and could run an unapologetic kamikaze mission on the incumbent (a la Bruce Herschensohn in '92), though that might be a better tactic with Boxer. Surely it benefits Feinstein to keep Boxer around since she can play the "good cop" to Boxer's "evil psycho cop" (even if DiFi is pretty poor herself). Mountjoy's candidacy may end up being the most ill-advised since the geriatric Paul Gann challenged Alan Cranston in a potentially winnable Senate race in 1980 (too bad Lt Gov Mike Curb didn't jump into that one -- ole Mike now lives about 20 minutes away from me in the tony suburbs south of Nashville -- maybe I could write to him and persuade him to run for Governor here, we sure could use him).

That would be great if Cindy gets into it! But looks like Frankenstein is gonna go along with the filibuster so unlikely Cindy will challenge her :(

"District" .. what "district" - Feinstein represents the whole state in the Senate - one little district is not the be all end all for Diane.

And .. if the pro-life walk in SF is any indication - even that bastion of liberalism is due for a remake.

I have met Senator Mountjoy, heard him speak, and seen him in numerous Republican/conservative gatherings interacting with people.

He is the EXACT opposite of a preppie RINO. Dick is as pure as red-state American as you'll find.

His candidacy is ill-advised and will go nowhere. But it would be great to see him in the U.S. Senate. Maybe if we had literacy tests for voting, he'd even stand a chance in California.

No, now she's going to because feinstein supported the war, if her kids are okay with it she'll jump in. I wish she was running against Hillary though.
