LOL Shocker!
THE DATE ON THAT ARTICLE IS JANUARY 15. She got 20,000 calls from DUers and her mind has changed and the other Democrats are on the fence and by this weekend with another 20,000 calls will vote yes.
We need 50 votes for nuclear option with Cheney being 51 -- we have those votes without a problem if the RATs want to go there. My two Senators said Alito will be confirmed on Tuesday one way or the other.
the problem is this - the gang of 14 aside, my fear is that some other republicans, who otherwise support Alito and support cloture, will nonetheless not vote for the nuclear option because of this "respect for the senate rules" thing. I don't know who they could be - maybe Lamar Alexander, maybe Ted Stevens, who knows. The vote on the nuclear option is a wholly separate vote from either the vote on cloture or the vote on confirmation.
This is what a majority leader is for - go into closed session with our caucus over the weekend, and hammer it out, show me 50 who will raise their hand and vote for the nuclear option - and at that point, the Dems will back off and simply vote for cloture to avoid it.
Hadn't she stated publicly that she would not support a filibuster ?
The RNC has 10 times the money that the Dems have and they are in a major panic. THAT IS ALL THIS IS ABOUT. The Dems will tell their base that they tried and failed, but only with more of their dollars, can they compete with the RNC.
Dont fall for their nonsense.
Colorado (my home) has gone somewhat purple. Salazar is wetting his pants right now, he is dead meat with a lot of people no matter which way he goes. He deserves this, he is Mr. Straddle, and I hope he strains his groin landing on the fence.
I hope they filibuster. We need to test the mettle of our Republican leaders. It is the fire that tempers the steel.
If Salazar announces that Alito is "extraordinary circumstances," the rhetoric will heat up markedly.
Lousy, rotten liar. "The record", my a$$. There was one and only one "record" that Fineswine "analyzed", and that was abortion.
I really, really wish that for once these 'Rats wouldn't insult our intelligence like this. We all know that abortion is all they care about. If they would just be honest with us and themselves and come out and say they are voting against these nominees (Roberts, Alito) because of the abortion issue, they'd at least merit some respect for being "honest", at least about why they are voting as they do.
From NRO:
"PRETTY SERIOUS YODELING" [Byron York]
From today's White House briefing:
Q: Can I also ask you, on Senator Kerry's comments, what is your reaction to the filibuster call by Senator Kerry, on Judge Alito?
MR. McCLELLAN: On his call yesterday? It was a pretty historic day. This was the first time ever that a Senator has called for a filibuster from the slopes of Davos, Switzerland. I think even for a Senator, it takes some pretty serious yodeling to call for a filibuster from a five-star ski resort in the Swiss Alps. (Laughter.)
Not in Kalifornia. A bag of excrement could win the Senatorship in this state, so long as it has a "D" after its name. (Come to think of it, that's exactly what we have for Senators)
The vote count was "close" on Circuit Court nominees that were arguably controversial. Alito is a nominee to the Supreme Court, and he is not as controversial as Pryor, Owen, etc. were.
My point is that if the cloture/nuke calculus was close on Pryor/Owen, etc., it's NOT close with Alito.
"Hadn't she stated publicly that she would not support a filibuster ?"
Yes, she had.
But I stand by my question: Did anyone expect a different outcome?
Ms. Feinstein's lines are busy, and her e-mail directs you to call. Phones are probably off the hook. I've been trying sincee you posted this article. I have the distinct displeasure of having her as my Senator.......and she's the "reasonable" one!
Flip, flop, flip, flop...
I think you're right, but I can see Warner voting no on the constitutional option claiming "comity" must be preserved even as the Dems take his lunch money.
Frist will go nuclear on a filibuster if one appears. Alito's confirmation is inevitable in any case.
