I'm a person who likes dogs. I've seen many arguments both pro and con about Pit Bulls. The one argument that stands out in my mind is the one that says Pit Bulls were bred for killing and you can't unbreed that instinct. Don't know if it's true but it sounds reasonable.

I believe that any dog is trainable to be safe around (from watching "The Dog Whisperer"...that guy is good). But the trick is that you have to understand dog psychology/behavior, and most people do not.

The problem I have with the "pit bulls should all be exterminated immediately" argument is that it bares a chilling resemblance to Gun Grabbing. The idea that because something is potentially dangerous, then the government has a right to seize and destroy it from private citizenry and ownership.

It is true, however, it doesn't explain why "pits" were quite popular pet dogs a CENTURY ago - when they were closer to the actual evils of deliberate fighting.

Though they've never been trained for it, I see a lot of "instinctive" behavior in my bird dogs, so that argument sounds reasonable to me, too.
