From Alas, a Blog -

"Which countries have the least abortion? Belgium has an abortion rate of 6.8 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44. The Netherlands, 6.5. Germany, 7.8. Compare that to the USA's rate of 22. Even better, compare it to countries where abortion is illegal: Egypt, 23; Brazil, 40; Chile, 50; Peru, 56. ... If pro-life laws are the best way of reducing abortion, then why are the world's lowest abortion rates found in countries like Germany and the Netherlands, while some of the world's highest abortion rates are in countries that outlaw abortion?"

The blog failed to mention that Germany has a 3 times lower rate of abortion than the USA partly because abortion is, actually, illegal in Germany where it is legal in the USA. The fact that it is not punishable in the first 90 days doesn't mean the woman did not commit a crime and knows she committed a crime.

We will be lucky to see such a law in the USA. My point was: Germany is way more conservative than the USA on the subject of abortion and German women are 3 times less likely to get an abortion.

Chile, by the way, is the only country in the world where abortion is 100% illegal under all circumstances, including rape, incest, etc.

Yet Chile has the highest abortion rate in the world as well: 50 per 1000 women between 15-44 get an abortion!

The new government might provide a solution like Germany's, where abortion remains illegal but the women don't go to jail if they get counseled by pro-life groups in the first 90 days...instead of leaping over to the unconscionable Roe solution of Americans which is a cult of indiscriminant death to the unborn in that there is no responsibility for a woman to talk things over with *anybody* and no recognition of a 90 day (or any day) marker *by either side* in the debate.

No question, no matter what the law says, temptation to commit an abortion are higher in poorer countries and where out of wedlock pregnancies are a cultural taboo. It does not follow from these data that pro-life laws do not reduce abortion.

What is especially shameful is that the US, where poverty is virtually non-existent and no social stigma applies to anything except child molestation (God knows why...), the abortion rate is so high. It also would be instructive to look into the reason for committing an abortion, per country. In the US they are overwhelmingly frivolous: no medical or economic justification, just plain convenience. If abortion were criminalized at least for those cases, the rate of abortion would be drastically reduced.
