Cops: Girl Died While Playing With Family Dog

(AP) MANORVILLE A six-year-old girl playing with her dog in the backyard was strangled - when the pet apparently grabbed her scarf and playfully pulled her down to the ground and dragged her around the yard. Suffolk County Homicide Detective Lieutenant John Fitzpatrick calls it "an absolutely tragic story."

Police say the accident happened in the backyard of little Kaitlyn Hassard at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. The girl came home from school wearing the scarf and the dog began pulling on it. The girl's mother put the dog in the backyard and a few minutes later Kaitlyn asked to go out and play with the dog, which weighs about 70 pounds.

The one-and-a-half Golden Retriever named Jessie, again began playing with the 40-pound girl tugging on her scarf.

Lieutenant Fitzpatrick says the girl was in the yard for no more than ten minutes, because the family was going to run an errand at the Post Office. When her eleven-year-old brother went to the backyard to get his sister, he found her lying on the ground.

The boy called his mother who called 9-1-1 and began CPR. The girl was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Lieutenant Fitzpatrick says "there were no injuries inflicted by the dog." He adds "I don't believe the dog's actions were intentionally malicious."

The dog has been brought to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter.

OMG how horrible for your mother! i realize people need to step up when they see signs of abuse, but i would hope that a grocery clerk would realize, that seeing a child on a single occasion does not give rise, under ANY circumstances, to assume abuse is occuring, unless they witness it in front of them! a teacher who sees a pattern of bruises occurring over a period of time, DEFINITELY, but a sales clerk?

You mean like this?

Arrest me, officer, as it happened on my "watch."

:-)

Friends of ours told us they got a dog so it would prepare them for having kids. Of course, they were at our house and their dog was locked in a laundry room peeing all over the floors. My husband and I make that remark to each other after we visit them and witness them in action with our children. Then we laugh hysterically...

The filthy pig is my sister in law soon to be nothing when the divorce is final.

Well, now we get to it; you have OTHER MAJOR issues in life.

MAJOR ISSUES, I'd say.

Well then you better keep up on her, becasue the way divorce works, she will have custody of your niece. You will not have close access to her unless your brother has visitation, which will probably only be every other weekend.

Are you also so bold to tell us that in all your time watching children, not one got a scratch, bruise or any owie on your watch? If you are, then I say you are not being honest.

That graphic is foul and disgusting. I guess you don't have any "retards" in your family.

Thats it. I'm calling the authorities.

Can you give me your information? ;-)

I have plenty of other stories to share. My mom grew up on a farm - if today's logic was applied to her youth, my grandparents would still be in jail for all their errors.

That's nice for you. I was out in the woods with my friends building forts, climbing trees to see who could get the highest, climbing rocks, jumping ramps on my bike and skate board, skiing, doing gymnastics, swimming, riding horses and having a blast, most of the time without parental supervision. I am a law abiding, tax paying, formerly employed, stay at home mom, conservative Christian. Common sense doesn't always prevent accidents. And I can recall several times that I did something that I knew would cause my parents to stroke out if they saw it. I did stuff that I knew was stupid, but wanted to try.

Playing in the backyard with the family dog would be about the safest thing I could have done in my parents mind when I was a child.

The dog is innocent (even if it's a Retriever ;-) ), but probably needed more manners training. He shouldn't incessantly and automatically be grabbing at things like that. They needed to train him properly.

I hope he doesn't end up dead because of this. He needs some1 who'll train him to behave in civil society. I hope some1 responsible will adopt him.

It ain't just vicious dogs who kill. It's stupid, disobedient, wild, & selfish (I'm gonna play w/dat no matter what!) dogs of all stripes. It doesn't have to be intentional for a dog to be deadly. Wish people would get that thru their heads and TRAIN. SERIOUSLY (not wishy-washy stuff).

We have 3 farms and I am begging my dad to get rid of his bulls. I remember the slave labor, I mean character building stuff, I had to do. It sucked and most of the equipment was dangerous, but work doesn't get done by itself, does it!
