If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

The core urban areas will remain Liberal. Everything else will fall to the Tories. As for the Conservatives not getting a majority, its simply because a clean sweep of Quebec isn't going to happen. Brian Mulroney achieved that in both of his wins in 1984 and 1988. Not this time. Unless such a breakthrough in Quebec materializes, a 200 seat plus Conservative majority is out of the question. If they get very lucky tonight, 160 seats are possible but I don't think they'd get more than that - not unless they win in places like Kingston and the Islands and pick off a couple of 416 Liberal seats. So the best they can hope for are 140. It will have to do tonight.

That is what a lot of people are predicting. But it sure beats the hell out of the last few elections and sure beats the hell out of what the polls said at the start of this election.

The CPCs have come a long way in such a short time.

There are two ridings in Toronto that I will be watching - Etobicoke Lakeshore and St. Pauls. I would love to see us take on of those ridings. My dream would be the CPCs to take either Don Valley East or Don Valley West but I think I am a little too hopeful for that.

That's why maybe it would be better for Canada to let Quebec go independent, so that the Conservatives can get a majority. That's probably why the Liberals fear Quebec separation, they know it could spell doom for them.

Doc, Elections Canada switched from the old field-checked Enumeration system with a Permanent List system during the 90's. This PDF document seems to have the details.

Its a safe prediction. Mark Steyn says the same thing. I'd love to be surprised and while its human nature to want to be optimistic, one is giving too much credit to the intelligence of the average Ontario voter. Its not easy to bid good-bye to the Liberals who've won for so long, nearly every one voted for the winner. Those who didn't like them stayed home.

LOL, I came in here this afternoon wondering when the live thread would start - and here it was already hours old. I should have known better!

Now I have to tear myself away to try to get in a nap, so I can stay up most of the night watching C-SPAN, CPAC et al. How the h*ll am I going to get to sleep????? ;)

No one cares about you in the Maritimes? That's how we Conservatives in B.C. feel? In fact, everything but Liberal in B.C. has felt like they don't matter. This time, we BOTH matter. However, it is still the vote rich Ontario that will carry the day.

I actually got on my knees this morning and asked God to even "change people's minds right in the voting booth" to Conservative if they weren't before. Today is a make it or break it day for Canada in my opinion. This country CANNOT take another Liberal Government. It's going to take years to undo their destruction anyway.

The advanced voting is one thing that really screws up the polling isn't it? I believe that the Conservatives are VERY MOTIVATED to get out and vote. Many likely have already voted.

In Kelowna today, my husband and I were at the voting booth by 8:15. It was already busy. The lady at the table where we voted said that when she got there at 6:30am this morning, there were already people sitting in their cars waiting to get in to vote. They expect about a 75% turnout according to the radio announcer. As GMMAC noted, HUGE turnouts usually mean this: THEY TURN OUT TO THROW OUT!! I agree.

The constant threat of Quebec separation is what elects the Liberals every time.
