Elections Canada ^ | N/A

Posted on 01/23/2006 8:03:44 AM PST by GreenLanternCorps

If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

From The Gazette:

---------------------------------------

Prime Minister Paul Martin appeared tense, his shoulders hunched, as he entered a polling station with wife Sheila to cast his ballot in his Montreal riding of Lasalle-Emard on Monday.

Asked how he felt, Martin said: "I feel great. I feel great." He then made a beeline to his waiting limousine, ignoring reporters' questions, smiling curtly, his eyes cast downward.

Paul Martin votes.

Holy crap, did the CBC intentionally hide this picture of martin trying to impersonate bruce springsteen on Saturday night. Martin looks like a john kerry/springsteen wannabe.

The picture is headlining CNN International's below article.

Canadians set for political change

For those in teh U.S. - Canada still uses paper ballots, where you write an X beside the candidates name. The ballot are all hand counted by election volunteers. Any room for shinanigans?

That's right.
That is what we call our coins.

The Loonie was so called because it had a Loon on it.

The Toonie got it's name because it rhymed with Loonie.

Red here has always been associated with Communism & Liberalism.

Here, too. Until somehow the MSM hijacked Blue and we all played along with it sometime during GHWB's election, I think.

I was talking to a good friend who works for Global TV in Halifax yeaterday, and if Martin's internal polls are telling him what my friend said this will be a very unpleasant night for Canuck Liberals.

GOOD!

No reason to change Loonies and Toonies either. We Canadians hated the Loonie coin at first but are now used to them. It's so named because of the loon bird on it, not anything else derogatory.

Toonies matched as a name and because of the $2 value. Toonies are rather nice because from the side they look like quarters, and you find out you have more money in your purse that you initially thought...

The word 'loonie'comes from slang becasue a picture of a loon is on one side of the coin. Twoonie rhymes with Loonie for the $2 coin.

I noticed the absence of a smile. And ducking the reporters' questions can tell you only one thing: the news is not very good for the Liberals.

I thought that Toonie came from $2 (two)=Two-nie to rhyme with loonie, which became the basis for Loonie Toonie coins?

What is going to be nice is to watch ridings in Ontario that were conservative for a long time until they went Grit in 1993. Ridings like Northhumberland and Barrie just as two of many examples that will once again become conservative after this election.

I am still holding out a little hope that my riding (Kingston and the Islands) may toss out the Liberal Speaker of the House but I won't be holding my breathe.

Yes.

The big problem is going to be people voting who are not actually citizens.

They don't have to show ID, just have a voters card.

For what it's worth (nothing), I think in the end we're going to see a higher than predicted number of Conservative seats, maybe over 145, keeping us all awake late into the night praying for a majority!

In rural areas, you don't even need to be registered. The election laws allow you to go to the polling place with a utility bill and drivers liscence in your name and you can vote on the spot. This is allowed because rural Canada is vast and it is impossible for election registrars to identify every residence. Especially when some people have addresses that ar rural routes and nor house number. That was from over 11 years ago; I don't know if things have cvhanged since then.
