Controversial American documentary filmmaker Michael Moore bemoaned an apparent right turn by liberal northern neighbor Canada in its upcoming general election.
"Oh, Canada -- you're not really going to elect a Conservative majority on Monday, are you? That's a joke, right? I know you have a great sense of humor, ... but this is no longer funny," Moore complained in a commentary on his website.
"First, you have the courage to stand against the war in Iraq -- and then you elect a prime minister who's for it. You declare gay people have equal rights -- and then you elect a man who says they don't," Moore moaned.
Conservatives led by Stephen Harper were ahead of Prime Minister Paul Martin's Liberals by a comfortable 10 to 12 points, polls showed Saturday, two days before Canadians go to the polls.
In "Bowling for Columbine," his documentary on gun violence in the United States, Moore heads north to Canada to flee the rise of conservatism on US soil.
"A man running the nation to the south of you is hoping you can lend him a hand by picking Stephen Harper, because he's a man who shares his world view. Do you want to help George Bush by turning Canada into his latest conquest?" Moore asked.
"Far be it from me, as an American, to suggest what you should do," he added. "I hope you don't feel this appeal of mine is too intrusive, but I just couldn't sit by, as your friend, and say nothing."
I wonder how many Canadians threatened to move to the US if the conservatives win.
Poor Mr. Moore, so deluded about how important his opinion is to Canada. I hope the outcomes irks Alec Baldwin's brother Daniel no end, although not enough to move back from Canada to the U.S.
Yo, Mikey Moore:
I am responding to your blatant inept attempt at intrusion into Canadian politics, as exemplified by the following quote attributed to you -
"Far be it from me, as an American, to suggest what you should do. I hope you don't feel this appeal of mine is too intrusive, but I just couldn't sit by, as your friend, and say nothing."
Please let me comment - if you won't, I'll do it anyway.
No, I don't "feel" that your appeal is too intrusive - I damn well THINK and KNOW that it is!
And please refrain from any reference to yourself as my "friend" - with friends like you, no one needs enemies!
But to reciprocate with a friendly bit of advice - stick to producing crockumentaries!
He probably breaks wind too.
Michael Moore is too stupid to realize how stupid he is!
I just remember the scene in Team America: World Police where the leader of Team America says the mountain was blown up by a "socialist asshole" or something like that after the Michael Moore puppet did a suicide bombing there. This makes me laugh as that did.
How does this compare to the number who have been quietly moving to the US while the liberals have been in power?
Well, now that's a real heavy-weight. More like a liberal fat-arse.
Now that would be funny. Conservative Canucks queueing up to immigrate to escape the spectre of rampant liberalism. Come on in, ye tired and huddled masses!
Interesting how Canada is turning right after all those lefties ran north after the 2000/2004 elections...
Exactly.
The thing that tickles me the most about this, is that it must absolute confound the American dolts who "fled" to Canada to escape the conervative majority here at home.
Ha ha ha, losers.
"when he weighs in , he breaks the scale"===
I'm glad I've learned to scroll down a bit and
read some of the first replies, because that is exactly
what I was going to type in, give or take. GMTA>
"you'll always have France, though.......
I don't know, things change.....before you know it, degree by degree, France also may find some kind of new rapprochement with the USA. I certainly have NO idea what diplomacy may be going on in the overarching game of geopolitics, but stranger things have happened. Consider the positive developments in Germany, with Merkel. Things DO change. We will get closer to France, as they get closer to us. We will never be very much like France, culturally, but people like the new Iranian poseur can only help to push the process along.
Canadians make up their own minds. Mikey's head explodes. Film at 11.
"Team America" was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. No one will ever dare to make as pointed a poltical lampoon as that again. Even a woman I know who has an important position in public health in Phoenix with AIDS patients cracked up over the faux-Broadway Musical spoof of RENT --- the production number with the whole cast singing "Everybody has AIDS! EVERYBODY HAS AIDS!!!!!!"
i guess she appreciated the anti-PC edge to it.
"US filmmaker Michael Moore weighs in on Canada's election"
He must have weighed in on cattle scales.
