That's a good point....little black babies used to have daddy's at home just like white one's did.

I wonder what is going on with the black churches. They used to be so strong. Of course, the churches are very political which means that it is probably hard now for people to use them as a community institution to address community problems. Sad for the black community that there is so much reluctance to criticize even the most destructive elements.

You southerners don't like Yankees too much I know, but why do you southerners send emissaries to the north to seek out technology companies using tax incentives (bribes) to relocate down there? Could it be that Yankee technology like mine is dependent on superior education and the classical ability to speak proper English?

I have been contacted by folks from the SC state capital to talk to me about relocating. I told them, don't bother, because all of my friends who have moved to the south have been immediate leaders in any industry they sought employment in. Isn't it even odd that many of the crew chiefs in NASCAR are out of the northeast? I think seriously, it is simply because they can actually speak in a language everyone can understand, but seriously, it is because they can order themselves and others, stay sober, don't have to talk and puff a butt at the same time, get up in the morning, and make it to work on time.

But with respect to Mitt Romney, the next President. It is at your peril that you have let out the welcome mat to so many of us Yankees. After all, we had the money to buy your property and make some of you rich. But the real reason Mitt is going all of the way is because all of the southerners who are LDS bashers will be taught a lesson, just as the R Catholic Church bashers were taught such a lesson in 1960 when JFK ran and won the Presidency.

It actually makes me kind of laugh when the southerners think that GWB is from the south. Well, he was born in CT from a parent who was born in Massachusetts who's parent was born in MA and who lives in ME for a large part of the year, and then he was raised in DC when he wasn't going to school in Andover MA or at Yale in CT. Yea, he is a real southerner.

I remember reading a town history of Yarmouth. It was common in the 1600's when it was hard to get skilled labor to move to a town to give them land to get them started, especially millers and beer makers. So it goes.

Interesting commment, considering what you recently wrote on another thread:

The author of the article should get out of Durham once in awhile. The South also rose because of the rise of the textile and furniture industries more than a hundred years ago. Plus in modern times, North Carolina has been a leader in banking -- a point he misses entirely. The nation's second largest bank, Bank of America, is headquartered in Charlotte.

Further, the South has known wealth before. He should sidle on down to Charleston and Savannah to see that in the colonial era there was considerable wealth created from the slave-based plantation system. And then there's the oil wealth of the Southwest. This man's horizon seems to be no more than 25 miles in a circle around Durham, N.C.

He also failed to notice that N. Carolina and Durham, too, have a native grown insurance industry. In fact, at one time, an insurance company in Durham was one of the largest black owned businesses in America.

As a former northeasterner (New Jersey) and adopted Texan, I concur with this. Unfortunately I now live in Minnesota, a terrible place that views people who have spent even just a year in the South (especially Texas) as "brain damaged"

The old poor South does linger, in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, and there are still substantial areas of poverty in the Carolinas and in Georgia.

I am so glad that the author got me straight on that. I could have sworn that poverty was pretty much universal. How nice for Florida, Tennessee and Arkansas that they don't have "areas of poverty". Seems to me I saw some pretty good examples of it in DETROIT when I was there last year.

Unfortunately, I agree with your post: I found the article to be very simplistic and befitting a "liberal" stereotype of history and NC and its past and people. Frankly, I've found the "natives" of North Carolina (most generally) to be far better informed and educated than most of the most/best "educated" in California.

What most people think they know about the Civil War, NC's past, and Southerners is wrong: It's so limited in comprehension and scope. It's as if they only read an "outline" (filled in the blanks themselves), as opposed to actual, historical facts.

Clearly, you live by "stereotypes" and "outlines" of history. When most Southerners talk about the confederacy -- they are talking about being forced to submit to a power.

Not the slavery thing. Although there are some groups who use the confederate flag to play "racial" issues games. These are the exception.

I don't buy that. What I have noticed, is that white guys I know in the military from southern states, these guys are officers from South Carolina and Georgia, use the "N" word all the time. Not in public but during their family gatherings, amongst themselves etc. I always found this surprising. Might be off topic I know, but something I've noticed during 10 years in the military. I will also say, on average, southern white males are outstanding soldiers/warriors and I like having them next to me in combat situations.

Very cogent post. It's as if the black community had been 'drugged' with liberalism. It tore the black community apart. What we see now are the results.
