My last prediction: Clinton vs. McCain
Peter A. Brown
Three years from now, a new president will be inaugurated. Since this is my last column, I thought I would share my crystal ball with you.
I am less sure of its clarity than at any time in my 30-year professional career that began when I covered the 1976 race between Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford.
Normally, three years out I am pretty sure who the Republican nominee will be and less certain about the Democrats.
That's because the Republicans respect seniority and until this year always had an obvious front-runner, kind of like a corporate executive vice president waiting to move into the corner office.
The Democrats are less predictable. More often they have been out of power, and that has led them in search of the best personality, rather than the best message.
Looking toward 2008 -- only the fifth time since 1900 that no incumbent president or vice president will be in the race -- I am much surer who the Democratic nominee will be:
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
SNIP SNIP
Events have transpired to make Sen. John McCain of Arizona, George W. Bush's major primary challenger in 2000, the Republican front-runner.
But McCain's history of feuding with some conservative groups -- which carry great sway in GOP primaries -- and, at times, the Bush White House leaves him potentially vulnerable on the right.
Yet being a maverick war hero, willing to buck the status quo and even take on his own party at times on ethics and campaign finance, is what gives him the early edge. Moreover, his Senate voting record is quite conservative, and on core GOP issues such as abortion, foreign affairs and fiscal responsibility, he is in the Republican mainstream.

Didn't turn out to be a fix at all!
If it's Clinton/McCain who are the Republicans going to run?
Prediction: If McCain enters the race, expect to see some enterprising reporter do a piece on all the horrible things that were said about him here.
McLame, otherwise known as Sentor "Unhinged", and his terrorist appeasement bill isn't going to bide well for his "BS Express" coming soon to a town hall near you.
I wonder just how much money I would spend against McCain, and if he managed to win the primary, whether I might actually vote for a Democrat?
I would rather see Hillary in the white house than McCain.
With Hillary, we could blame the resultant destruction upon the Democrats.
With McCain, we would see the Republican party come to the same situation that Bill Clinton brought the Democrats. Splitting of the party between those who give a damn about it, and those who simply want to win at any cost.
LOL......what to do.....what to do!
For all their talk, the Dems won't make Obama a VP candidate, especially if the Beast heads the ticket. She and Bill have a record of being anti-Semitic and racist, so no Jews and no Blacks on her ticket. McCain won't be the GOP candidate. His lack of loyalty, his instability and his dirty past (Keating 5) will keep him from winning.
McCain won't win the primary, he's pissed off to many in the party by siding with Dems (forming the gang of 14) to destroy our judiciary.
Hillary won't win the primary, he's pissing off the kook-fringe base by positioning toward the center.
Both are pushing their parties base farther away. Neither stand a chance in hell of winning their primaries...
If, as the reporter says, Republicans respect seniority with regard to whom they nominate for president, McCain would have won the nomination in 2000.
As a matter of fact, McCain will be lucky to retain his Senate seat in AZ and Hillary, is losing credibility with NY's wackiest putting her seat in jeapordy too...
I don't see either one of these winning the top spot honestly..... Both may want it.. but I don't see either one of em getting it.
They both make me want to throw up.
Agreed....I think I have a better shot of becoming a President than McCain. He speaks whats on his mind too much, making for some embarrasing sound bites. He's old, he's had cancer, he's not in touch with the conservative base that does the nomination, etc.
.
I really believe that unless he screws up, Allen should have this nomination handed to him on a silver platter. Rudy is interesting, but pro abortion - I dont seeing that play real well with the base. Romney, yeah right....McCain, see above. Frist??? Maybe.....
Clinton versus McCain? The personification of the 'lesser of two evils'. Problem is I don't know which is which!
The only debate the Shrill will be having is with a prosecuting attorney in some courtroom -- hopefully.
The only way Pubs beat Hitlary is with Mcain.
He won't win the nomination due to the hatred he has inspired among hard-core conservatives.
I believe that the media has a wealth of bad things about McCain, and they are holding it all until he manages to win the republican nomination.
Out here in the west we like to refer to bovine emissions of this type as "cow pies." Or Montana Frisbies...
