It has to do with control of the markets. Ever notice how many theaters are AMC or other mega-block companies. In order for a movie to be viable, it has to have a way of reaching the customer.

I'm told by an independent movie theater manager that the mega-block companies virtually dictate what will be shown, on how many screens, etc. If the theater does not wish to follow that formula, they will not be "offered" the next block buster.

Oh, by the way, most Theaters do not make much if any profit from ticket sales. Almost all profits are generated from concession sales.
