France defends right to nuclear reply to terrorism

BREST, France (Reuters) - France said on Thursday it would be ready to launch a targeted nuclear strike against any state that carried out a terrorist attack on French soil.

In a speech defending France's costly nuclear deterrent and toughening policy against terrorism, President Jacques Chirac said Paris must be able to hit back hard at a hostile state's centers of power and its "capacity to act."

"The leaders of states who would use terrorist means against us, as well as those who would consider using in one way or another weapons of mass destruction, must understand that they would lay themselves open to a firm and adapted response on our part," Chirac said during a visit to northwestern France, where France's nuclear submarines are based.

"This response could be a conventional one. It could also be of a different kind."

It's a nice spot - a couple of miles from the mainland but a world away from it as well! It's never dropped below freezing whilst I've lived here, usually around 10 degrees C at this time of the year, but during the summer it is usually 22 - 26 and up to 30 on a good day. We also get very little rain - an average of around 70mm per month, I believe for example Chicago get around 200mm per month. The Island itself is 150 square miles and half of that is protected environment. It takes half an hour to get to the mainland by car ferry or 15 minutes by fastcat. The town of Cowes is the world centre for sailing. Best thing however is, that we have very little crime and many liken the island to living back in the 1950's. I like it, but I'm old fashioned!

We don't have rainy weather - average monthly rainfall is 70mm - compare that with for example Cologne, which is on a similar latitude, but gets around 195mm of rainfall. Yes, you Germans are mean - you keep all the good stuff for yourselves. Interestingly, Isle of Wight wines have far more in common with German wines than French ones.

The way I see it is Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan should be glass parking lots by now. France asserting its right to defend itself is absolutely right. I just wish the US was operating under the same principle.

I wear a cowl and sprinkle ash on my hair to expiate for my false estimates of the weather on the Isle of Wight. If you ever come to my contry take some bottles of wine with you. 2 + 2 = 4

Good wine has contains no fuseloils and doesn't cause a headache.

Imagine if GWB made such a statement.

Thats Chiracs point. What he is saying to Iran, in effect, is you are now isolated, and any act, anywhere (though he means the US), that falls back on Tehran, leaves Iran open for te harshest possible punishment.

Chirac is no ally of the US, so this little statement should tell you how serious the Iran threat is.

Does France think Uncle Sam has the right to respond in kind?

That is what Chirac is really saying.

Almost all came with a warning that was too late to save any lives! The warnings were given so idiots like you would sympathise with them - ahhh, they might be terrorists but at least they are trying to do the right thing!

Get your facts straight - all muslims do not want all non-muslims dead and the vast majority of the Irish did not support terrorism - you insult an entire nation with your thoughtless comments. Furthermore, the attacks your country suffered on 911 were a result of IRA collaboration with other terror groups, namely Al Quaeda. The AQ attacks on 911 were a direct result of IRA terror training camps held in the Libyan desert in 1993 and 1994 where AQ operatives were taught terrorist skills in bomb-making, evasion and counter-insurgency techniques by the IRA and later put to good use. The IRA in return were paid in arms and expolsives. Even two years ago, IRA terrorists were being arrested in Columbia training FARQ terrorists how to kill Americans in return for drugs and weapons.

Your ignorance is embarrassing and your callous disregard for those innocents killed is shocking.

I do not know why it is that difficult to blow Ahmadinejad and Khamenei into pieces with a good old MOSSAD-, KGB-, CIA-, MI5, BND- or whatever action.

I believe your analysis is correct. Eliminating Ahmadinejad and the men who placed him there should be the logical course of action. Fighting a full-scale war with Iran would be disasterous, and the situation resulting from a massive bombing attack could prove even worse in the long run.

Almost all came with a warning that was too late to save any lives!

That's funny, I saw quite a few times where the London police had some area cordoned off because of a warning about an IRA bomb called in by the bombers themselves. Compare and contrast this to Islamic terror, which has never come with a warning, ever.

I don't sympathize with them, however, I can see differences in scale, scope, method and purpose which seem to be going right over your head. IRA and Basque and Tamil and similar separatist groups do not pose a global threat to civilization. Islam does. The IRA never threatened the very existence of Britain. Islam does.

...all muslims do not want all non-muslims dead

Any devout Muslim sure does, it is written right in the Koran that they must seek global domination and that it is their duty to eliminate all others.

[Koran 2.191] And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers.

See more here. It is clear that you do not yet understand what we are facing in Islam.

Islamic terrorism long predates the IRA, whose role is very minor. This is like holding the Tamils accountable for Palestinian terrorism because they collaborated once in 1969 and Arafat learned the suicide bombing from them. Yes there is a connection, but if you're chasing this then you are far off the main road to a solution.

Your ignorance is embarrassing and your callous disregard for those innocents killed is shocking.

I should say the same for you. Comparing terror for Islamic conquest and the nationalist terror of the IRA, Basques, Tamils, and so on is comparing a fly to an elephant. As someone who has actually been hit by a terror attack - unlike yourself - I find your moral equivocation shallow and suicidal.

I thought he did, soon after 9-11. He said our response to any WMD on our soil would be nuclear, and we would track down the state behind the terrorist who supplied the weapon.

I bet going to London is like traveling to another planet. Sounds like a great place to live. I bet life is pretty "Laid Back" there. What do you do for a living?

What is the water temperature around your island?
