Police: Mom Told Kids To 'Stay In Bed' As House Burned

Woman Faces Murder Charges

POSTED: 6:56 am EST January 18, 2006

MIDLAND, N.C. -- Investigators say a North Carolina woman instructed her two young children to stay on the bed as she fled the family's burning home.

That woman is now charged with murder. Lisa Louise Greene, 40, is being held without bond.

She applied for a court-appointed attorney at a hearing Tuesday attended by her friends and family.

Detectives used Greene's statements to persuade a judge to let them search her home for blood, DNA and substances that could be used to ignite a fire.

The search warrant detailed some of the inconsistencies that Cabarrus County Sheriff Brad Riley said led to Greene's arrest. She told firefighters she saw fire only inside the children's room, but the warrant said there was no evidence of burning or charring inside the room.

Talking with a 911 dispatcher as the house burned, Greene also said the door to the children's room was closed. She later said Addison was on the bed and Daniel was on the floor. She said they had been watching a movie and had a lit candle in their room.

Greene also told investigators the fire was so severe she couldn't help the children.

But the search warrant said, "The fire could not have reached the level of severity claimed by Ms. Greene at that time, considering the timeframe and the actual damage to the dwelling."

Addison Macemore, 8, and her 10-year-old brother, Daniel, died in the Jan. 10 fire.

Greene is also charged with arson, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

If she is convicted, put HER in a burning house and lock the doors.

Puzzling. The article (garbled as it is) seems to imply that the children were injured or unconscious before the fire. 8 and 10 years old, they'd just sit there and suffocate because their druggie mom told them to?

Post-partum abortion... the next civil rights frontier.

It seems to me that having a different last name than your parent(s) is VERY dangerous to children...

Please. My mother remarried when I was 13 and it hardly led to my demise.

I think that lets her off too easily, but I am too upset to offer a lawful alternative now.

My stomach hurts.

This is one of those cases where I think the killer should die in the manner they killed. Especially involving children.

My two older children are 8 and 10. Dear God.

Let this woman burn.

My dad died when I was 5 and my mom remarried when I was 12 and we had different last names. No big deal. My step-dad was great.

What kind of judgement is that? My oldest two children do not share my name, that doesn't make them not my children, nor would I ever do anything but love them and raise them best I can.

Jeez.

I'm just speculating here, but if the woman had a history of abusing the children they may have been too afraid of making "Mommy" angry to leave the room.
