CA: Issa backs Bilbray for Cunningham seat
San Diego Union Tribune ^ | 1/11/06 | Debbi Farr Baker

CARLSBAD – Rep. Darrell Issa said Wednesday morning that he was endorsing former Republican congressman Brian Bilbray and will serve as his campaign chairman in the race to replace disgraced Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham in the 50th District. Pointing out that his district, the 49th, is touched on all sides by the 50th, Issa, R-Vista, said he needs a partner in Washington D.C. who has the experience and integrity to get work done on behalf of the North County.

"When you are looking for someone who is trusted and proven and who has been in the arena and has been bloodied a bit you could not find a better person than Brian Bilbray," Issa said in a news conference at Maxton Brown Park on Laguna Drive, with the Buena Vista Lagoon as a backdrop.

Issa said Bilbray is a proven leader who has been at the forefront of on issues important to North County, such as illegal immigration.

Bilbray, who represented Imperial Beach in Congress from 1994-2000, authored the "birth-right" legislation that is part of the immigration reform package now being considered in Washington, Issa said

Bilbray said he was honored by Issa's endorsement and looked forward to his active participation in his campaign.

"Darrell Issa is a man who knows what need to be done in North County and San Diego and he knows what need to be done in Washington D.C," Bilbray said.

Bilbray also announced that Roxana Foxx, former chairwoman of the San Diego County Republican Party, would serve as a co-campaign finance chair.

Bilbray also picked up the endorsement of the Deputy Sheriff's Association of San Diego County from President Jim Duffy, who said that Bilbray would work on homeland security issues important to law enforcement.

Issa said Bilbray, if elected, will have more senority than he does in Washington and will be "first in line" for key personal, committees and even his choice of offices.

But that's Ok with Issa. "He will take the best he can, but he will do what is right for this district," Issa said.

Among the others in the race are two Democrats – Francine Busby and Chris Young – and six Republicans. The GOP candidates are state Sen. Bill Morrow, R-Oceanside; former Assemblyman Howard Kaloogian of San Marcos; former Del Mar mayor Richard Earnest; businessman Alan Uke of Del Mar and Ken King of Rancho Santa Fe.

Cunningham resigned in November after pleading guilty to conspiracy and tax-evasion charges stemming from his dealings with defense contractors. He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 27.

The 50th Congressional District runs along the North County Coast from Carlsbad south to Del Mar and also includes the cities of San Marcos and Escondido as well as the neighborhoods of Rancho Santa Fe, University City, La Jolla and Rancho Bernardo.

What color is the sky in your world ? Why do you and your buddies choose to ignore Bilbray's OWN liberal voting record ? I submit, ma'am, that is exactly YOUR type of attitude that has allowed California to turn 'Rat. Keep offering people NO discernable choices from the liberal 'Rats and act surprised when the real deal wins.

Bilbray wants to drive home border control and fiscal sanity in Washington.

Other candidates want to do the same thing. Why choose one that also is not a defender of 2nd amendment rights, is very liberal on environmental issues, etc.

Sounds like he may know a bit about the illegal immigration problem to me.

Which says absolutely NOTHING about what he proposes to do about it.

It just seems some people in this thread prefer to bury their heads and repeat falsehoods. Let's presume for a moment that Bilbray is the "great savior" on the immigration issue, how does that excuse his abhorant stands on all other important issues from economics to personal safety to basic morality and decency ?

Of course, my next question is, how much are the Bilbray and Issa camps PAYING these people to shill for them ?

From your posting history and photos on your homepage,
not to sure of yourself are ya.
If I wasn't for Bilbray, after you and some of the others,
it would make me a supporter.

This thread is hilarious!
Issa just said Bilbray gave up a cushy job as county supervisor and was the only Republican willing to stand up against Lynn Schenk. His 3 wins were real squeakers.
It took a visit from Darth Clinton himself [my term] to defeat him.

He says Bilbray has 6 years seniority over him [Issa], which would indeed kick in immediately.

If the goal is to find the most effective candidate, the 50th district voters have an excellent pick to choose from.

Bilbray's experience will enable him to hit the ground running with his seniority and be able to get more done.

Still touting the same thing, I see. It makes no sense, as was pointed out when you posted it before. Bilbray needs some new talking points for his campaign. How will someone gain seniority over the other Congresscritters(R) who have been in there fighting for the past few years. He wasn't a loyalist by any means then (as evidenced by his voting record posted upthread), why do you think they'll give him seniority now (thereby reducing the seniority of others). Why would they move this guy forward in line?

I think AuH2ORepublican said it better on a prior thread (in a post to you, doodlelady).

Doodlelady: "If elected, he would enter Congress as a senior member"

AuH2ORepublican: "Actually, he probably wouldn't. He would just have more seniority than someone sworn in on the same day, but since he'll be running on a special election, whoever gets elected will come in ranking 435th in the House. Sometimes the Speaker (or Minority Leader, as the case may be) will offer an ex-Congressman part or all of his old seniority if he runs, but in a heavily Republican district where Bilbray isn't needed to hold the seat I doubt that Hastert will offer anything to Bilbray---why would Hastert piss off the dozens of Republicans with less than 6 years of seniority who would be stepped over by Bilbray?"

I just heard Issa 30 minutes ago explaining the seniority on Hedgecock. If elected, Bilbray has 6 years seniority over Issa.

Like I said. He's one of several excellent candidates for the lucky 50th district voters to choose from.

Exactly. These folks are so desperate they are
doing a fiction job on Bilbray's views.
Half a truth is the same as a lie.
Who is paying them to shill for those who can't win.

"From your posting history and photos on your homepage, not to sure of yourself are ya."

My posting history ? Please elaborate. What exactly are you insinuating, sir ? Put up or shut up on your allegations.

"If I wasn't for Bilbray, after you and some of the others, it would make me a supporter."

Oh, so like your fellow liberals, you have an aversion to the truth of Bilbray's LIBERAL record ? Or is it you're just being paid by Bilbray and/or Issa to shill for them on this forum ? Things that make you go "HMMMMM..."

Indeed, either Kaloogian or Bill Morrow. Accept no liberal RINO substitutes.

So you are now denying Bilbray's ACTUAL VOTING RECORDS ? You are now in moonbat territory.

"If elected, Bilbray has 6 years seniority over Issa."

The general rule is that people who leave Congress and then return start off with 0 seniority. Sometimes the Speaker (or, if the member is in the minority, the Minority Leader) will make an exception and let the member keep his old seniority, but that usually occurs only when the candidate has been heavily recruited by the party because they need him in order to win the seat; as I've said before, I think it would be a bad idea for Hastert to give Bilbray his seniority back. But one thing that is abundantly clear is that, even if Bilbray got his old seniority back, he would *not* have 6 years of seniority over Issa, he would have 6 years of seniority, period. Since Issa was first elected to the House in November 2000 (coincidentally, the day that Bilbray lost his seat) and sworn in in January 2001, Issa has only a bit more than 5 years of seniority, so Bilbray would have a bit more seniority than Issa (and other GOP Representatives first elected in 2000) if he was elected and somehow got his seniority back, but certainly not 6 years of seniority over Issa.
