Plymouth, Mass. -- Police shot and killed a 16-year-old boy early Tuesday after he drove a car at them while fleeing the scene of a possible burglary attempt, authorities said.

The two officers opened fire, killing Anthony McGrath, following a high-speed chase that started at a liquor store in Plymouth.

"My son got a death sentence," the boy's mother, Denise McGrath, told reporters. "I want to know who killed my son for no reason at all."

"Maam, he was killed when he tried to run over some policemen"
"Why would they kill him? Why didn't they try to shoot him in the foot or something?"

Local radio reported that he drove at them, hit a parked car, hit a utility pole and then made a second attempt to hit them.

I may know this kid's family. His name and his mom's name are familiar, and I served with a McGrath 15 years ago, and he had a son who would be about the right age today. God, I hope I'm wrong.

And this is another such article with no quote from the father.

Was the father interviewed by the press? Could they locate him?

I was envisioning Joe Friday reading that, and after the last line turning to Bill Gannon- giving the knowing frown, looking down and...dum-da-dum-dum...

Same from my perspective.

Unless unavoidable due to environment or proximity....get out of the way.

Moving MVs with dead or incapacitated drivers can be a jumbo problem not to mention the fuzzy trajectories of ricochets off of moving surfaces from most anything other than .45s (we had 9's...no 40s at the time were issued).

But this seemed to have worked out well for all concerned but the welfare slut (assumption) breeding sow.

People think I'm nuts because I want to know where my boys are, who they are with, and what they are doing 24/7.

Sounds just like my house.

Because he is so young it is a tragedy...sounds like he was a messed up loser kid. I hope the investigation will show that the cops did have to shoot to save their lives...it seems that often cops are too quick on the trigger...but sometimes killing is entirely justified...hopefully the latter in this case.

Not to be nit-picky, but only dead people are eligible for the Darwin Award, so his mom wouldn't qualify.

A.G. Riley is in some deep doo-doo over interference in a fatal accident case involving adult beverages.

"Not to be nit-picky, but only dead people are eligible for the Darwin Award, so his mom wouldn't qualify."

I'll go ahead and pick a nit by pointing out that you don't have to die to receive a Darwin Award, you just need to lose your ability to reproduce.

The story from the site that comes to mind is the one about the kid who tried to throw a M-80 firecracker out the window of his car to impress his girlfried...except the window was actually rolled up, and the M-80 bounced off and landed in his lap. Makes me wince just thinking about it...

She should be charged with neglect and any other kids she has should be taken from her. That's nonsense.

I've known more than a few parents who cannot control a teenager...one that physically threatens when trying to discipline them.

...I don't know exactly when the paradigm changed from getting out of the way to opening fire.

I suspect the first time that reasoning was accepted is when it became SOP. In my hometown, we had some cops get off the hook with that one even when it was shown that the driver couldn't possibly have been coming at the police, what with the car being in a one lane tunnel, and the victim being shot in the back. (And no, the car wasn't in reverse).
