Since when is the judicial nomination process, or the makeup of the court for that matter, dependent on having as close to a near-perfect balance as possible!?

It is looking as though Roberts is so precise with language and law he may already be influencing Anthony Kennedy (weak scholar). A recent case came before SCOTUS -- the funding case in which Harvard demands our money but wants to prohibit military recruiters. He finally got someone to admit that they couldn't deprive the military of their free speech and someone suggested setting up a different place, far away. Then Roberts quipped "Separate, but equal?" They backed off.
Oh, he is a great add to the bend already.
