America's model housewife turns feminist as husband abandons her
Guardian Unlimited ^ | January 8, 2006 | Paul Harris

It is 25 years since Terry Hekker hailed the housewife, now in a landmark decision the acclaimed author has rejected her past saying she was wrong

Terry Hekker wrote a book in 1980 that made her famous. Ever Since Adam & Eve was a passionate defence of her decision to eschew a career and spend her life as a wife and a mother.

Coming at the end of the Seventies, when feminism was enjoying a renaissance and the career woman was emerging from behind the cooker, Hekker became a celebrated poster child for more old-fashioned values. She wanted her job choice of 'homemaker' to be considered as valid as those of up-and-coming women bankers, bosses and company directors.

Today, Hekker told The Observer, she is planning a follow-up book. Its working, albeit jokey, title is bluntly honest: Disregard First Book. For her life did not turn out as she planned, and she now believes her decision to become a housewife and homemaker should serve as a warning for young American women. 'My anachronistic book was written while I was in a successful marriage that I expected would go on forever. Sadly, it now has little relevance for modern women, except perhaps as a cautionary tale,' Hekker wrote last week as she announced her U-turn.

In a display of spectacular bad taste, Hekker's husband presented her with divorce papers on their 40th wedding anniversary and left her for a younger woman. The divorce left her facing an uncertain financial future, bereft of income and - after spending her adult life bringing up five children - lacking skills to make her attractive in the job market. Despite that, the judge in her divorce case suggested that - at 67 - she go for job training.

"As far as this article goes, I doubt that she is 'bereft of money' after 40 years of marriage. She not only gets half of the property, but a hefty alimony if she did not work for 40 years."

She didn't work?
Exactly what do you call raising 5 children?
According to you I don't "work" either - yet I find this business of raising kids to be the most difficult "job" I've ever had.
There are times when I crave the peacefulness of dealing with adults at a nice quiet office.-
I suppose I could hire someone to do the job I do - pay them - so they can be considered officially "working" (when I previously wasn't) so I can go out and "work."

Oh yeah...if I did this the Freepers would accuse me of abandoning my kids.

So guys...what is a woman to do? Please tell us the secret - y'all are so good at telling us what we're doing wrong but you don't give us alternatives.

I have a special needs kid, so I understand where you are coming from.

However, there are some women that never take the time to understand their families finances. You obviously are adept on the computer or you wouldn't be on free republic. If you had to, I imagine you could figure out something to do.

I'm thinking about taking a test to be certified to be a notary public. You just have to study a little bit, and then take a test. I figure if I get certified, then I'll have something to do to bring in money. (You can make money if you travel to get papers notarized.)

I have a degree in computer science, but those jobs are full-time jobs. I'm trying to figure out something else that I could do in the event my husband gets injured or dies. I've known more men that have died (my brother and three friends) than I do know of men asking for divorces.

I hadn't read your post and I posted the same thing.

Great minds think alike!

I'm pretty sick of both variations. Neither one is particularly helpful, IMO.

That's my point. "Feminazis" are clearly not welcome on FR. But "Machonazis" are, and they aren't helpful to the cause of attracting women to conservatism.

I'm for healthy relationships and attitudes between men and women, not just 'equally and oppositely destructive'.

Where are those sources on FR?

They're generally strongly identified with liberal politics, and wouldn't be found around here. But the message is pretty widely spread throughout the culture.

Besides, when you're running the show on a lot of university campuses, why bother with an Internet message board?

As I explained before, you shouldn't be surprised that feminism produced man-haters which produced woman-haters. That's what it was intended to do.

let me figure this out...50% of the house, 50% of the car, 50% of the vacation house, 50% of spouse's pension, 50% of spouse's income, and generous lifetime support

How about the "women are not your sex objects and pets ping list." Or how about "wounded puppies, get out of politics and go directly to your shrink" ping list. The second one would be sexually neutral as nasty wounded puppies seeking revenge applies to both sexes.

I have compassion for both men and women who have been abused by their spouses. There are plenty of both. To me, it is the biggest betrayal of love and family one has available in life. I think adultery is one of the big ten for a reason - the absolute damage done to the souls and the lives of the betrayed and abandoned ones. It breaks my heart.

But I can not abide by hatred for all men or all women as a worthy reponse or political agenda as we see on this web site. As far as the porn addiction thing and it's view of women and men as sex toys - that makes me sick. Sex without love debases both love and sex - two of my favorite things in life. There is a place to promote porn and this is not the place. Porn has nothing to do with liberation; it is far from free in the consequences department.

Darlin',
In my years here on FR, I honestly can't remember a single thread that when on and on that was man bashing from start to finish. Yeah, there's been a snarky post or two, but not 1000+ post threads that pretty much rip women over and over and over.

Yeah, there are man bashing sites out there, but you expect better from FR.

So you're saying that its women's fault that men have become women haters? (in the guise of the feminist movement).

Where does personal responsiblity come into play?

Hun,
If you're a stay at home mom, you're called lazy and a pet for not working.

If you're a working mom you're a bad mother and abandoning your kids.

If you're a single woman, you're called picky snob and a feminazi.

If you're a single mother, well, you're just nuthin' but an ole ho/skank/slut.

Did I leave anyone out?

I think I was pretty clear on what I said. The goal of feminism was to destroy marriage and sow emnity and distrust between the sexes.

It has largely succeeded.

"Feminism" is a political ideology, BTW. It's not a code word for "women" or "all women" or "only women" or even "very many women". Some key players in advancing the feminist ideology were/are men.

my heart goes out for her. It may be even worse than staying virgin spinster for life. At least then she wouldn't feel so foolish for investing herself in her marriage, which turned out to be nothing in the end.

You left me out! If you're a happily married, career-oriented woman who didn't have children, you're selfishly hastening the End of Western Civilization by missing your true purpose as a mother.
