LAST spring, I dropped by an anti-war rally in White Plains. When I made it clear that I was an Iraq vet who supported the war, the insults began to fly. Most slurs were boilerplate anti-war clichés, but one man struck a nerve: He marched up to me, looked me straight in the eye to ask, "You joined the military?" and when I proudly answered "yes," responded, with utter disgust, "You are a sucker."
I felt the same rage last weekend just watching Rep. Jack Murtha declare on TV that, were he younger, he wouldn't join today's military.
I expect that kind of rhetoric from the washed-up anti-war rabble that congregate on street corners to relive their glory days not from retired Marine colonels.
Murtha's call last year for a cut-and-run strategy in Iraq was one thing irresponsible and unwise, but basically just stating a policy position. This is different.
What a nice New Year's treat for the beheaders and suicide bombers to know that a decorated Marine and lawmaker thinks the U.S. military is not only "broken" but not worth joining. Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi will no doubt use Murtha's words to inspire his band of thugs to hold out longer and kill a few more Americans assuring them that ultimately we will wilt like Murtha.
Why would Murtha not want to be part of a military that in the past four years has liberated 50 million souls and heroically brought aid to tsunami and earthquake victims, saving untold lives? Surely he knows that all was chaos in New Orleans in the wake of Katrina until Gen. Russell Honore's 1st Army and the 82nd Airborne came to town and provided relief and a security presence.
Evidently, Murtha doesn't think this is noble work.

Similarly, Jack Murtha should know that millions of men and women have personally benefited from the discipline, training and structure of the military and used the traits learned in uniform to make countless contributions to civil society after their service.
If Murtha wouldn't want to be a part of a military that did in Afghanistan in three months what the Red Army couldn't do in seven years and that put genocidal maniac Saddam Hussein behind bars and his brutal sociopath sons in the ground, I am glad he is not.
But he's surely undermined military recruiting. Think he'll resign his committee assignments relevant to the military?
Last year, despite a media that overemphasizes the negative aspects of the war and an organized anti-recruitment effort, the Marine Corps exceeded its recruiting goals by 2 percent. The Navy and Air Force met their goals. The Army, which fell short of expectations last year, is exceeding them in Fiscal Year 2006 (which started in October).
Fortunately for the United States, a turncoat blowhard like Murtha won't stop the tens of thousands of good men and women inspired to serve this great nation."
I couldn't agree more!

What is becoming clearer is that top Democrats like Murtha and Pelosi are cowards and traitors. Let's not pull any punches here. Most Dems are interested primarily in creating a Vietnam type backlash against this war.
They want to relive the late sixties and early seventies. They see this as their path to power. Frankly, since Watergate and Vietnam have shown that the only way the Dems can win national elections is through scandal, that's what they and their allies in the MSM must protray.
What a bunch of losers.
kellynla - thanks for posting
You other people - just sharing
My 20 years Air Force service taught me a number of important lessons. One of the primary ones was to ignore the idiots like Murtha. Surprisingly enough, most Americans know what patriotism looks like and can spot the phonies like Murtha and his anti-American ilk 9 out of 10 times!
Turncoat is the appropriate term. He might've been admirable at one time, but his past does NOT explain his current behavior. He was roped in by the communists disguised as the Demonratic Party, and that's pretty much it.
Sadly Murtha has made himself into scum...Kerry, Kennedy, Pelosi, Reid, Boxer....and now Murtha. Traitors who seek power but will find they get Islamic fundamentalism instead. It is coming. They have a plan. You get what you tolerate.
37 years in the Corps doesn't give Murtha a pass on everything he says and does for the rest of his life.
After all, Lee Harvey Oswald was in the Marine Corps too.
And Benedict Arnold was a patriot at one time also.
Semper Fi,
Kelly
The liberal hypocrisy is breathtaking. If a conservative dare criticise Murtha for his statements, he is met with an indignant "How dare you question a man who served his country?" Yet, they do not hesitate to practically spit on a veteran who doesn't share their viewpoint. Where is their much-vaunted "respect" for the military?
Benedict Arnold was a decorated war hero before he turned----
Thanks!
I posted the balance of the piece in my comments.
His pride hurt (he stated he resented now being given an ear by the White House on how to conduct the war), he is now venting his spleen and the gases it contains.
A shame, too, is that he will be remembered now not as a hawk Democrat in an age in which the Democrat Party is mostly anti-American, but as a foil of victory and an aid to he enemies of the United States.
He may have been a warrior once; now he is just a fat old dog, doing tricks to get his belly rubbed.
We will not be defeated on the battle field. The enemy is within.
The difference is that Oswald did not fire a rifle on 11/22/63, Murtha, the NYTs, WaPo, and the rest of the MSM are engaged in a conspriacy to take down this president.
Their agenda is very clear.
BTTT
But Murtha fits the Benedict Arnold comparison perfectly. Even if he only spent 33 in the reserves with two call-ups he paid his dues. (As opposed to the Christmas in Cambodia former candidate).
Nevertheless, having you feelings hurt and turning on the institutions you swore to protect is about as low as it gets.
