The United States government reportedly began coordinating with NATO its plans for a possible military attack against Iran.
The German daily Der Spiegel collected various reports from the German media indicating that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are examining the prospects of such a strike.
According to the report, CIA chief Porter Gus, in his last visit to Turkey on December 12, requested Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to provide military bases to the United States in 2006 from where they would be able to launch an assault.
The German news agency DDP also noted that countries neighboring Iran, such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, and Pakistan were also updated regarding to supposed plan. American sources sent to those countries apparently mentioned an aerial attack as a possibility, but did not provide a time frame for the operation.
Although Der Spiegel could not say that these plans were concrete, they did note that according to a January 2005 New Yorker report American forces had entered Iran in 2005 in order to mark possible targets for an aerial assault.
Maybe it's short for "Importer of Asparagus."
I'm more inclined to blame the interpreters than the editors.
Bombs away!
Don't count on turkey for anything
Me to, but seems like a pretty obvious miss for the editors... that is their job.
How you figure? We're not exactly there (in Iraq) alone. We do have NATO/European allies with us.
How is it you make glass?
Somewhat resembles prior threads.
Saddam has a long moustache.
repeat
Saddam has a long moustache.
I'm sure the NYT is already working hard trying to find a leaker on the Air Staff. Days before the mission, they will publish key aspects of the Air Tasking Order on page 1. It will no doubt be complete with the target list (with impact points), ingress/egress routes, mission time windows, ordinance loads, ELINT parameters, AWACS orbits, and (yes) even the tail numbers of planes. After all, the public has a right to know!
Shhhhhhhhh! It'll be our little secret. Nobody tell the NYTimes.
we better do it now
The New York Times will tell us when it is going to be launched, from where it is going to be launched, and the specific targets.
We were visiting family in Southern California over Christmas and took a ride up to the Reagan Library on the 28th. It was so crowded that they had to shut the place down right after we got in because they had reached full capacity!
It was great and the Air Force One exhibit is awesome.
I believe Iran is a threat to our well being as a nation, but is China just going to let us go after their business partener? Doesn't China get 20% of their oil from Iran?
We already have access to bases at least as well positioned as Turkish ones. Diego Garcia for the heavies and tankers. At least one in a 'stan. Plus there are plenty of runways in Iraq just sitting around unused. Even Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi can't be too pleased with the notion of a nuclear armed Iran.
