C.S. Lewis wrote a wonderful chapter on that in "The Screwtape Letters."

Wormwood was to call his temptees attention to the fact that he was humble and encourage him to feel pride at it. Should he note that he was feeling proud and squash that feeling then Wormwood was to call his attention to that and so on. He was however warned not to over do it "Less he realize what you are doing, laugh at you and go to bed."
