Yes, the only real difference between Western Civilization and previous civilizations, is we do things on a bigger scale.

It would seem that "trading" was much more "global" than most people thought, even in the 20th Century.

"Global" was much smaller 2,000 years ago than it is now. The Greeks ran a widespread olive/olive oil trade. To the east, of course, spices and tea--but that was much later down the road.
