Menorah destroyed by vandals in Orange County

Associated Press

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - A public menorah erected on an Orange County town green to encourage understanding about Judaism and Hanukkah was destroyed by vandals.

The 150-pound menorah, which was 15 feet high and 10 feet wide, was placed earlier this month in Ladera Ranch, a planned community near Mission Viejo.

One or more vandals struck between 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, cutting the menorah's stem, breaking its lightbulbs, and smashing its stars, said Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Lloyd Downing.

He said the incident has been labeled a hate crime. An adjacent Christmas tree display was left unharmed.

A public lighting ceremony had been scheduled for Monday, a day after the start of Hanukkah.

...

Robert Cohen, who built the menorah four years ago, said vandals covered it with toilet paper last year. He posted a message on the community's private Web site Saturday urging residents to come to Monday's lighting ceremony, which will include other menorahs.

"I think it is very important that we mute the message of intolerance a few tried to leave last night with a louder one of unity and strength," said Cohen, who founded Havurah, a Ladera Ranch Jewish friendship group. "Not only should we show up, but we should make sure we invite our friends and neighbors (of all beliefs) to join us," he wrote.

Residents joined him in condemning the incident.

"It's a real shame that we have people who are anti-Semitic or who just want to get a rise out of us," said resident Bo Kelleher. He said the menorah and a living Nativity scene in early December at the same town green had "increased the awareness of spirituality of the holidays."

This happened in my community and I along with many others of a variety of religious backgrounds will be attending the Menorah Lighting Ceremony.

This kind of thing just sickens the heart.

There was an identical incident the other day on the other side of the country: Menorah vandalized, nearby Nativity scene left untouched.
I think this is an orchestrated strawman campaign by lefties.

ROP?

More likely the MTV generation who think that this kind of thing would make a good JACKASS video.

Hope we get to see the tape at trial.

The lovely Gaede twins, aka "Prussian Blue." The latter is another term for hydrocyanic acid, the active ingredient in Zyklon B.
There's a fair chance these two can be deprogrammed at some point in the future, but their parents should be exiled to Mexico or fed to wolves, I'm not sure which would be worse for them.

And the little darlings' names are Lynx and Lamb. With names and upbringing like that, they are SO going to be dancing around a pole later in life.

Funny you should mention that, there was an article in the Palo Alto Daily here about people getting their Christmas decorations stolen, and they had recently caught some kids on a traffic stop with all kinds of stuff in their back seat from people's lawns. No mention of a video camera, though.

I think their parents should be given first-hand experience of Zyklon B.

Things haven't been the same in the O.C. since the Cohens took in Ryan Atwood, that bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks.

But if a creche or nativity scene isn't allowed on public property, why does a menorah pass muster? It's doubtful that one can seriously make the case that one is exclusively religious and the other wholly cultural and non-religious. There's something misguided about the project.
