Feinstein takes lead in wiretap criticism

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein led colleagues from both parties Tuesday in calling for an inquiry into President Bush's authorization of domestic electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens.

Feinstein, a California Democrat, wrote to Sens. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. — the chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee — and to Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va. — the chairman and vice chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence — asking that the panels probe the matter jointly.

"We write to express our profound concern about recent revelations that the United States government may have engaged in domestic electronic surveillance without appropriate legal authority," she wrote. "These allegations ... require immediate inquiry and action by the Senate." Specter already has said Judiciary will probe the matter.

Joining Feinstein on the letter were Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.; Carl Levin, D-Mich.; Olympia Snowe, R-Me.; and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., all Select Intelligence Committee members.

The New York Times last week reported the National Security Agency has had President Bush's authorization since 2002 to conduct warrantless wiretaps of international calls to and from the United States involving anyone suspected of involvement with al-Qaida.

Bush vowed Monday to continue the program. He insisted Congress' Sept. 14, 2001, authorization to "use all necessary and appropriate force" against terrorists authorizes this broad authority, as does wartime power granted the commander-in-chief by the Constitution.

Poll question we'll never see:

"Are you in favor of warrant-less surviellance if it will prevent another 9-11 attack in America?"

PLEASE point to me where in the Constitution that it says people who receive phone calls from KNOWN TERRORISTS, that want to murder Americans have a Constitutional right to do so

I missed the part in the Constitution where it says that you are protected to plot and murder American Citizens

Don't look now, but I believe Dianne's hubby is a businessman who regularly does business deals with the Chinese. Hmm. I wonder why she's so concerned.

Do members of the Judiciary committee have security clearance to hear the same material as members of the Intelligence committee? I would guess not from the comments of both Feinstein and Rockefeller - all that crap about poor Jay couldn't talk to anybody about his misgivings in regard to the program, etc. so he wrote a letter and put it somewhere for safekeeping. What I'm really wondering is why a lot of the Democrats are frightened by the idea that we would be listening in to communications from terror suspects overseas to people in this country. Some of the Republicans objecting are the usual dupes who fall for the Democrat propaganda every time (the deep thinkers, for instance, like Snowe and Collins - DUH!) and then we have the usual suspects like Hagel that just wants his face in front of a camera hoping it will help him reach higher office or massage his very large ego, but was is Specter up to? You can be certain he has nothing good on his agenda, but did he really promise to aid in impeachment of the president to get all that union and Soros $ last year?

But Dianne, you already knew about this. Just like Boxer, you already knew. It's really pointless for you and others to continue your charade. You will only continue to be exposed as the fools you are.

If "poor Jay" couldn't talk about the program with anyone why does the NY DNC Times original story specifically mention him as having raised objections to the program? Rockfeller is a liar and a traitor and needs to be stripped of his seat on the Intellegence Comittee.

Let's not forget to include the traitorous John Kerry. IMO, the Mother of all Secret and Sensitive Information leakers.

Worse things than being "stripped of his seat on the Intellegence Comittee" should happen to this s.o.b. if he is proved to be the leaker, but considering what happened with Leahy, it's likely that would be the worst we can expect to happen. Maybe, just maybe, the Justice dept. will have the goods on this p.o.s. since as far as anything I've seen, nobody has reported that the investigation of his previous leak of intelligence that cost us a small fortune plus giving up the satellite program has been closed. Hopefully, somebody was keeping an eye on the traitor to see what his next treasonous move would be.

Instead of investigating the Bush administration, we need to investigate WHO IS DOING THE LEAKING!

I think that's already been fairly well-established. It's a US Senator. Hint: his name rhymes with "Jay Rockefeller".

I'm going to say this again. I don't know what the big deal is over this entire ordeal.

We do domestic spying on American Citizens everyday in this country. I believe it's called a "sting operation". Don't y'all watch "COPS"?
