U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein led colleagues from both parties Tuesday in calling for an inquiry into President Bush's authorization of domestic electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens. Feinstein, a California Democrat, wrote to Sens. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. the chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee and to Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va. the chairman and vice chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence asking that the panels probe the matter jointly.
"We write to express our profound concern about recent revelations that the United States government may have engaged in domestic electronic surveillance without appropriate legal authority," she wrote. "These allegations ... require immediate inquiry and action by the Senate." Specter already has said Judiciary will probe the matter.
Joining Feinstein on the letter were Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.; Carl Levin, D-Mich.; Olympia Snowe, R-Me.; and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., all Select Intelligence Committee members.
The New York Times last week reported the National Security Agency has had President Bush's authorization since 2002 to conduct warrantless wiretaps
I wonder how many calls intercepted were between Al Queda and Democrat Senators?
CLINTON ADMINISTRATION SECRET SEARCH ON AMERICANS -- WITHOUT COURT ORDER
CARTER EXECUTIVE ORDER: 'ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE' WITHOUT COURT ORDER
Bill Clinton Signed Executive Order that allowed Attorney General to do searches without court approval
Clinton, February 9, 1995: "The Attorney General is authorized to approve physical searches, without a court order"
WASH POST, July 15, 1994: Extend not only to searches of the homes of U.S. citizens but also -- in the delicate words of a Justice Department official -- to "places where you wouldn't find or would be unlikely to find information involving a U.S. citizen... would allow the government to use classified electronic surveillance techniques, such as infrared sensors to observe people inside their homes, without a court order."
Deputy Attorney General Jamie S. Gorelick, the Clinton administration believes the president "has inherent authority to conduct warrantless searches for foreign intelligence purposes."
Secret searches and wiretaps of Aldrich Ames's office and home in June and October 1993, both without a federal warrant.
Jimmy Carter Signed Executive Order on May 23, 1979: "Attorney General is authorized to approve electronic surveillance to acquire foreign intelligence information without a court order."

Remember This? We knew or should have known!!!] Anyone remember this??
It was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt.Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration.
There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!
He was being drilled by a senator; "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"
Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir."
The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a little excessive?"
"No, sir," continued Ollie.
"No? And why not?" the senator asked.
"Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir."
"Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.
"By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered.
"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"
"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.
At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked.
"Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie answered.
"And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.
"Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."
The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip.
By the way, that senator was Al Gore!
Also:
Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners."
However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands, The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released.
Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified.
It was censored in the US from all later reports.
If you agree that the American public should be made aware of this fact, pass this on.I thought Ollie and said another terrorist(?name escapes me now) not Bin Laden?
Thanks for bringing this up... I had no idea that Osama goes back that far.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Charles R. Wilson, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, and Scott Charney, Chief of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, jointly announced that John and Alice Martin of Columbia County, Florida, today pleaded guilty to intentionally intercepting the radio portion of a cellular telephone call, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2511(1)(a) and 2511(4)(b)(ii). United States District Court Judge Harvey Schlesinger in Jacksonville, Florida accepted their pleas and sentenced them to a fine of $500 each. The statute does not provide for a term of imprisonment, and the maximum fine permitted under the statute is $5,000.
The communication that was illegally intercepted took place on December 21, 1996, and was a conference call among Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich and others.
The case was handled by the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, in conjunction with the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. The investigation is being handled by the Washington Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
And the Congress critter who release it to the NYT got off.
I think Oliver North cited another terrorist--not Bin Laden. Maybe Abu Nidal.
Yo! Mz Feinstein, please do tell me alllll about the "Desert Protection Act".
It wasn't Osama that he cited.
Does anyone have a copy of the famous "secret" memo from John D. Rockefeller outlining the Democrats' plan to use "intelligence" matters to hurt President Bush? It might be helpful to point out just which part of that plan includes this most recent attack.
Rockefeller just wants to make sure his name didn't show up on the list : )
The RINOS in the Senate are causing serious, destructive problems for the Republican Party. And yet, when they are up for reelection, here comes the RNC, et al to shower them with campaign funds.
I suggest that, henceforth, we contribute directly to the candidates of our choice.
It was Abu Nidal who Ollie was in fear of.
#4 is wrong. North never said Bin Laden. That's an Urban Legend.
Abu Nidal was after Ollie and his family.
Everything that I have read on FISA says that THE PRIMARY PURPOSE is to thwart terrorism in this WAR. The right to privacy AS IT RELATES TO TERORISM becomes secondary.
I hope Condi Rice comes home next year to run against Feinstein. I am sooooo tired of the Boxer/Feinstein Dumb & Dumber duo from CA.
