Wife of Joel Osteen Asked to Leave Plane (posted 12/20/2005)

HOUSTON — The wife of the pastor of the nation's largest church was asked to leave a plane after she failed to comply with a flight attendant's instructions, the FBI said Tuesday.

Houston Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen, his wife, Victoria, and their two children boarded a Continental Airlines flight from Houston to Vail, Colo., Monday. The plane's door had been closed when Victoria Osteen and a flight attendant had a disagreement.

"She failed to comply with the flight attendant's instructions, and they were asked to leave the flight," FBI spokeswoman Luz Garcia said without elaborating on the disagreement.

The FBI reviewed a report from Continental after the incident, Garcia said. No charges will be filed, she said.

The flight was delayed more than an hour while the Osteens' luggage was retrieved, Garcia said. The family took another flight to Colorado, where church spokesman Don Iloff said they were skiing Tuesday.

Iloff called the disagreement with the flight attendant "minor" but would not say what happened.

"In semantics, they might have been asked to be removed," he said. "Really, it was more of a mutual thing."

Continental spokeswoman Julie King would not discuss the disagreement but said in a statement that the situation was resolved.

Osteen's sermons are broadcast across the country and his book "Your Best Life Now" has become a best seller. His church has more than 30,000 worshippers weekly and meets in a renovated arena where the Houston Rockets once played.

I saw a good show about the life of Mother Teresa on TBN....

When she came to accept an award at Marquette University when I was there in 1981 her "luggage" was a plastic K-Mart sack.

Isn't it also likely that the flight attendant had no idea who Mrs. Joel Osteen is?

I saw part of Osteen's recent interview with Larry King Live and shut off the set when Osteen made it clear that he did not "condemn" people and was not into "social issues."

Jesus condemned sinners and then told them to go and sin no more. Many today won't even bother to condemn the sin.

You can have them down until the plane shuts the door and pushes back. Since 1st class boards first, it's not unusual for people to have their trays down.

Actually, on Continental 737's and 757's, the trays in First Class don't come down, but rather they are stored in the armrests. They fold up and out and are hinged in the center so you can have only half the tray out or all of it.

It is the general custom for the flight attendants to place pre-takeoff drinks on the front flat area of the armrest between the seats (there is a small pull out tray at the front so that two drinks can fit). As you said, having your tray out during taxi is not allowed, but I rarely see people take out their trays before the door closes and I fly an average of twice a week on Continental so I do sit up front around half the time.

Actually, if Mrs. Osteen was calm and cool, I would think that someone who had been upgraded would have volunteered to give up their first class seat for the sake of getting there on time instead of having to sit and wait for their bags to be offloaded. I know I would have.

Actually Mr. Osteen and his feel good religion is probably very popular with gays, so I imagine a gay flight attendant would have been only too happy to wipe up Victoria's mess.

And I traveled like that for about 8 years. And I typically had my tray out/down in both first class and coach. Obviously, we've never flown the same flights or you'd remember me :) I was a United ff.

Victoria Osteen and FBI have different views on what occurred aboard airliner (Houston Chronicle, 12-22-05)

Here are some of the ministries Lakewood Church is heading up and that the pastor (Joel) is in charge of overseeing:

BEYOND THE WALLS

Lakewood Church encourages its members to share the love of Christ with the
Houston community through volunteerism, evangelism, and ministry. Regardless of your interests, spiritual gifts or talents, there is a place for you.

“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:12

ANGEL FOOD MINISTRY

Angel Food Ministries provides a “hands on” opportunity to meet the physical, financial, and spiritual needs of people at Lakewood Church and the Houston community. Specifically, Angel Food provides groceries at low cost.

These are fresh quality products provided by the same distributors that supply our local grocery chains! The food is not outdated or damaged.

There is no limit to the number of boxes an individual can purchase, and there are no applications or qualifications, everyone can participate in the program.

Food purchased as a donation for someone in need, is a fully tax-deductible charitable donation. This is a great opportunity to bless someone in need.

URBAN EVANGELISM

Each month, Lakewood Volunteers visit and minister to the lost, hurting and those in need. Ministry locations will vary from parks, the downtown area, shelters, and apartment complexes to the homeless on our streets. Training is provided before each outreach.

SATURDAY COMMUNITY OUTREACHES
Different outreach events as planned.

HOSPITAL & NURSING HOME MINISTRY

The Hospital and Nursing Home Ministries are committed to ministering the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. Our dedicated volunteers bring encouragement, prayers of faith and the healing touch of Christ to those who are hospitalized, homebound, or reside in residential care facilities.

COMFORT MINISTRY

Assisting with funeral arrangements;
Officiate funerals, wakes or memorial services; and
Providing comfort and support to family members following the funeral.

The Comfort Ministry also offers a Grief Recovery Support Group, which meets bi-monthly. This class is designed to be a relaxed time for discussion and support where people who are recovering from traumatic events or are walking through the process of bereavement can find love and hope. The Grief Recovery Support Group is lead by facilitators who share scripture, resource materials and prayer to help people as they grieve in an atmosphere of safety and peace.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Stephen Ministry provides one-to-one care to those who are experiencing grief, separation or divorce, serious illness, loss of employment, or any other painful life situation or crisis.

RECOVERY CLASSES

The Recovery series are open to the public and are designed to assist individuals through biblical teaching and instruction. They will help you regain health and vitality in your relationships, finances, vocation, personal well-being, and aspirations.

Various provided courses include Addiction Recovery, Anger Management, Breaking Strongholds, Boundaries, Divorce Recovery, Fidelity, and Search for Significance, which give direction and a pathway to achieving your best life!

They also help people every month with job loss - to write resumes, learn how to do an interview and get career ideas to help them get employed.

OUTREACH MINISTRY

The pastor, choir members, musicians, and other members of the church do evangelism concerts to reach out to the lost as well as other Christians. And many have come to the Lord through these outreaches.

****

Victoria is young, and whether or not she did anything wrong, I believe she has learned a very hard lesson - that people in the public's eye have to be much more careful in words and actions than any of the rest of us!

I just believe that just as President Bush is maligned by people who do not know him, Chrstian leaders's actions will also be distorted...especially the image of those who are pro-life. And many of you have been there! So consider that when you judge!

I believe the book is currently a bestseller.

Because it contains mostly fluff, like his preaching.

Osteen is such a phony. His "service" is like an infomercial. I really don't see his appeal.

His followers tithe 10% for the church which does a lot of good work for not only the community but other nations as well. Joel's personel wealth comes from his books which he has rightfully earned. The Osteens are good people who should be admired. God wants all of us to do well, we should not show jealousy, talk bad or punish someone who might be an achiever. It was just two women on a plane who did not see eye to eye. We are all sinners and make mistakes, who knows what really happened. Does it matter? God will be the judge. What have you done to help others, do you love Jesus? Maybe you should focus on something positive. A relationship with Jesus is about as positive as it can get. Open your vision and expand your horizons. Good luck and god bless you.

First of all I do love Jesus. I am just skeptical of many TV ministers including Mr. Osteen.

On Larry King Live, the following very disturbing conversation occurred with Larry King and Joel Osteen:

KING: What if you're Jewish or Muslim, you don't accept Christ at all?

OSTEEN: You know, I'm very careful about saying who would and wouldn't go to heaven. I don't know ...

At this point, even Larry King appears surprised by Osteen?s answer. Then Larry tosses Osteen a "softball" to explain his previous answer And again Osteen openly denies that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way of salvation.

At this point I agree that I cannot judge who will be going to heaven but I do know the only way to get to heaven is through Jesus Christ. I would think at that point he would have told Larry that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ. He like so many ministers today seem to be afraid to take a stand for Jesus. Is it because they do not want to offend anyone so they can maintain numbers in the the church..I do not know.

I do find it interesting that you tell me to open my vision and expand my horizons.....you assume that I am jealous of his success or his achievement. Jealousy is not something that is my heart. I am more concerned with ones spiritual wealth than financial.

The church I attend our teaching is based on biblical doctrines. It seems Mr. Osteens teaching are more motivational than biblical doctrine. However, that could be how he was preaching the few times I have heard him. Does he frequently refer to Scripture in his teachings? I really do not know.

I am just not ready to jump on the Joel Osteen bandwagon.

God bless you my dear and thank you for your reply....

American taxpayers double, triple, quadruple (and more) "tithe" so their political leaders/public "servants" (barf) can go First Class.........and beyond.

Sinful in both cases.
