The eastern Roman empire fell in the 15th century.
Being knowledgeable in Church history, I think it is questionable how "Roman" the eastern empire was, which I think is evident in relations between the Holy See in Rome and its divide with the Patriarchy in the East during this time.
Technically, though, Rome never fell - it is alive today in the Roman Catholic Church, who continues to carry on its language and history, and its "empire" reaches every corner of the earth with 1.4 Billion people.
Romulus would be proud to know that the prophecy foretold to him would be true. :-)
