OUTSTANDING!
It would not surprise me if they knew about it before that, though I'd need to see whether what they knew included what Alsop revealed in his article, which referred to a specific missile installation. However there are many unresolved historical issues surrounding the downing of Powers' flight and whether he was simply shot down as reported or whether some type of espionage was involved. In any case, the goal of Alsop's article was to score PR points against Eisenhower by putting him in a position where he could not refute an allegation without revealing classified information, for which the NYT can be blamed independently of whether the Soviets already had information about the U-2, IMO.
Interesting, well researched article.
This says it all right here:
"To what extent these attempts to purge Communist elements from the Times were successful is unknown.'
Fact is, they were NOT successful, at the Slimes or at the Globe, or any of today's leftist rags.
Any effort to promote global socialist/communist agendas will be tolerated, including pro-terrorism, treason, manufacturing stories, yellow- and checkbook-journalism, political scams, smears and entrapment, Goebbels would be proud of their tactics.
I like another's comments here: Accountability is NOT a violation of the 1st Amendment.
Thanks for mentioning the Glomar incident--I considered including that but didn't want to get too long. In that case Hersh went ahead with the article after CIA Director Colby specifically asked him not to.
With all the scandals originating from this newspaper, why does it still stay in business? How long is enough is enough?
Old Grey Hooker Ping!
This is excellent, Fedora. Very nice!

All accounts we have indicate that the Russians threw EVERYTHING they could at Powers' U-2, and managed to bag several of their own MiGs in the process. We sent Powers on a last grand tour of Russia's most heavily defended sites, on a mission that would have spent 12 hours over hostile territory (flight plan was Pakistan to Norway), so the risk level was far higher than it ever had been. Espionage may have played a role--but the level of risk was frightfully high, even if the Russians had no idea it was coming. Again, State was getting detailed complaints from the Russians (time of flight, altitude, and locations overflown) from the first mission. Lockheed spent considerable time and energy on trying to make the Dragon lady stealthy--they found they could, but only by slowing it down and lowering its airspeed.
nice

Nice post!
And that is "THE" mystery.. And the ONLY question thats NEVER asked is, are you a communist or just a socialist since communism "IS" socialism..
Sounds like you've researched the U-2 a bit :-) Interesting.
Richard Bissell's memoirs claimed that Powers' flight had been compromised during a layover in Peshawar.
A great rehash of how the Times and implied, how other MSM ally themselves with the Dem-leftists to undermine the military, the national security, of course , W, with just plain lying. Rush today had a list of how the lefty Dems employed such a list of wrongheaded national security gaffes in their determination to cut and run for the last 50 years!! You cannot trust the MSM nor can we ever trust the lefty-Dems in securing our protection. The Dems are near Petain, wussies, Quislings as any in our history nowadays when it comes to national security.
