Immigration Hits Five-Year High, Report Says

WASHINGTON - Immigration — both legal and illegal — continues to boom as Congress grapples with how to better control America's borders.

A new report by the Center for Immigration Studies found that 7.9 million people moved to the United States in the past five years, the highest five-year period of immigration on record.

The report, released Monday, comes as the House prepares to take up a bill to curb illegal immigration by boosting border security and requiring workplace enforcement of immigration laws.

There are 35.2 million foreign-born people living in the United States, according to the report, which is based on the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey from March. The report said an estimated 9 million to 13 million are here illegally.

"The 35.2 million immigrants living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded — two-and-a-half times the 13.5 million during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910," said the report by Steven Camarota, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates tougher policies on illegal immigration and favors attracting immigrants with needed job skills.

About 12.1 percent of the current U.S. population was born in another country, the highest percentage since 1920, according to Census figures.

Grappling? Hell, last I saw, the only thing to come out of Capitol Hill was a plan to give all the illegals incentives to bring even more illegal aliens over!

Very disapointing. We have Republican control of the White House, and the Congress. Its our own party that is failing us on this issue. We have the power to do something about it but we won't.

You beat me to it. The first sentence tells it all as regards the real agenda. The 'Solutions' are clear, embodied in law and most certainly doable. What is laking is the will and Congress, the Executive and, in some degree, the Judiciary are paralyzed by PC, other political concerns and deep pocket pro-illegal constituencies.

I've long since given up on these morons and don't see any meaningful action on immigration until all Hell breaks lose. Maybe then they will take action but not before - Akin to the response to Terrorism pre-911.

Well we can thank our el hefe Presidente for this. Every bit of it. His ONE AMERICA agenda is being conducted at the full expense of America, in so many ways. There is no mystery anymore.

The numbers are up because the illegals think there is going to another amnesty program and they are flooding in to not miss out.
I love Ronald Reagan but the 80's amnesty program was an unmitigated disaster. All it did was make anyone who followed the rules wonder why they bothered.
rewarding law breaking is a sure course to anarchy.

The RNC called me to beg money the other day. I told them to solicit funds from all of the immigrants and illegals pouring into the country. Jackasses in elephants clothing.

That amnesty was bad news, it was pushed by Alan Simpson and Romano Mazzoli and to this day Simpson continues to defend the disaster. Reagan should never have agreed to it but it was part of a compromise bill that included tough employer sanctions and several thousand new border patrol guards. Unlike McCain, Cornyn, Kennedy and others who are trying to pull another bait and switch on us I'm convinced the Gipper would recognize the scam for what it was and not do it again.

The report said an estimated 9 million to 13 million are here illegally.

Over one million people have been coming here illegally (and then breeding like rabbits) every year for decades and the gov't expects us to believe there are only 9 to 13 million here total? Triple/quadruple those figures for accuracy.

The fact that the largest rate of increase has come after 9/11 is simply inexcusable.

Yep, after the amnesty they'll all be so grateful to President Bush for his compassion there'll be stampede to register as Elephants to show their appreciation. ....and then the GOP will have won over the vast majority of the formerly Rat-dominated constituency. Rove is a genius, amigo.
