Wasn't there an uproar when Rudy was thinking about postponing the elections after 9/11? Hillary was definitely against it if I remember correctly. Wonder if she is speaking out against Blanco for actually DOING it?
He he he. The Emperor. That's a pretty slick way of avoiding mentioning Hitler. :D
Seven states provide for the postponement of elections; Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, and North Carolina.Louisiana: Upon issuance of an executive order declaring a state of emergency or impending emergency, the governor may suspend or delay any election. The governor shall take such action only upon certification by the secretary of state that such a state of emergency exists. As chief election officer of the parish, a clerk of the court may bring to the attention of the secretary of state any difficulties occurring in his parish due to natural disasters. If any delays or suspensions are authorized by the governor, the delayed election day shall resume or be rescheduled as soon thereafter as is practicable. LA. REV. STAT. § 18:401.2 (2004). 6
[6] The Louisiana election emergency statute begins with the following statement of findings: Due to the possibility of an emergency or common disaster occurring before or during a regularly scheduled or special election, and in order to ensure maximum citizen participation in the electoral process and provide a safe and orderly procedure for persons seeking to qualify or exercise their right to vote, to minimize to whatever degree possible a persons exposure to danger during declared states of emergency, and to protect the integrity of the electoral process, it is hereby found and declared to be necessary to designate a procedure for the emergency suspension or delay and rescheduling of qualifying, absentee voting in person, and elections. LA. REV. STAT. § 18:401.2 (2004).]
That is sooooooo funny!!!!!!!
"...the city is incapable of holding elections in February because Hurricane Katrina caused so much damage to polling sites and voting machines."
Not to mention all of the missing files with the dead voter info!
What a d__chebag. Just trying to hold on to power a little longer.
One problem. From the article, "Blanco's executive order cites the recommendation of Secretary of State Al Ater, the state's top elections officials, who has said the city is incapable of holding elections in February because Hurricane Katrina caused so much damage to polling sites and voting machines." Al Ater is a Republican.
LOL - I'm laughing at your parody, though it still enrages me that he'd lie like he did with that whole story. That was just disgusting.
These two shitheads need a complete and utter smackdown if they think that Mardi Gras is more important than elections, or repairing a city that was completely destroyed.
Apparently beads and boobs and booze are cheaper than fixing voting machines, or the city.
WTF???
"I guess those busses haven't dried out yet."
Yep, they will need those on election day to get folks to the polls.
For me the problem isn't that Ater is a repub. It's that the majority of leadership in Louisiana lacks principles, courage, and/or b*lls. And that applies to 99.9% of our politicians.
Al Ater is a Republican.
You know it's a dirty move and smacks of corruption, but in some ways I'm happy. I don't think I could stand to hear the years long rants from the "Reverend" Jackson and his cronies about how the poor homeless black folk of NO were disenfranchised.
Oops...
Al Alter is a RAT of the Democrat variety.
Yes and no. "[T]he delayed election day shall resume or be rescheduled as soon thereafter as is practicable" is reviewable by the judiciary. The language is obviously intended to deal with more timely emergencies (like a major fire last week... not months earlier). A judge could easily decide that "as soon as practicable" means "on time".
As I've pleaded on several other occasions-- please, rest of America, don't send these corrupt bastards one more dollar. If you don't help them camoflage themselves with federal dollars their incompetance may become evident to even the most clueless in this state.
Please.
