Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.
Here's a few helpful links.
C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.
C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.
C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.
C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.
OR FEDNET has online feed also.
A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).
THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]
Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority
And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.
THE WAR DEPARTMENT (aka The Dept. of Defense)
Yes, it was that piece of scum Durbin.
I'm really hoping that Illinois gets zero in next years budget.
Now this bill has to go back to the house; I hope in the House the pubbies hang together, make a minor modification to the ANWR piece and send it right back to the Senate with ANWR included and make the Senate come back between Christmas and the New Year to vote again. The pubbies who voted with the democrats on this bill tonight should hang their heads in shame.
I think so.
vote 93-0
Thank you, I was trying to follow this from the office earlier and wasn't sure.
That would be perfect. They had already agreed on the compromise, there is no reason for this. It's an uncalled for betrayal and those senators who have a "R" after their names that voted against it, should be made to pay in a very serious way.
NONE of the states with Republican senators that voted against ANWR better EVER ask for help paying their heating bills...and I hear it gets really cold in MAINE.
One silver lining out of all this, next year's budget is going to be really, really small. As a matter of fact, I'd be willing to bet you'll be able to tell tonight the only states that will have any pork at all in the budget. New York, California and Washington will of course, suffer major cuts.
He won't .. though I'm sure he thought about it tonight
S.2167, extending Patriot Act; S.3010, appropriations for HHS; H.R. 1815, Defense authorization.
WHEW...thanks.
I am especially glad, since the vote was so close.
It gets really cold here in Indiana as well but Lugar doesn't seem to care. Bayh I expect this out of, but not Lugar.
They don't have a unilateral right. The points of order this morning, by Conrad (on S.1932 omnibus budget reconciliation) resulted in stripping three items from the budget reconciliation bill, and the House has to meet in order to deal with that difference. The House will do the same with the stripping of ANWR from S.2863, DoD appropriations.
The Senate has "the right" to vote the conference bill down, and providing a mechanism for further negotiation (via voting on alternatives and passing it back to the House) is a good thing.
One thing you two should also remember about Sen. Stevens...
he just voted FOR the bill, after having his ANWR amendment jerked out....which was classy..
BUT, yesterday, Sen. McCain was up on the Senate floor blasting everyone over the PORK in the bill...which he does with every bill, but then votes FOR it..like the chicken that he is. Well, yesterday...he was VERY, VERY pointed in his displeasure with the pork in ALASKA..he mentioned it about 4 times...and glared where Sen. Stevens would sit.
Then, remember, that in the Defense Authorization Bill, that will be passed by a VOICE VOTE tonight...McCain did the exact same thing that every one was insulting Stevens for doing with ANWR. McCain added the "torture" amendment on a defense bill, knowing that the Senate and the POTUS would NOT vote down a defense bill..
But, like we saw today....on Stevens amendment...they filibustered.
Stevens has a real right, IMHO...to be a tad upset tonight.
I have never been fond of Steven's spending habits but since the US Senate sees fit to stunt his state's economic growth maybe he has the right :)
Thanks for the info and I hold Senator Stevens blameless. I really feel bad for the man. I hope he has calmed down for his own sake. He impressed me with his class on voting Aye. He really did.
lol---yeah...shoot, down here in Texas, I sometimes feel like the "powers that be" in Washington, forget that WE are out here...
Can you imagine what it must be like for Alaskans??? They must truly feel like they are in a different country..
Will Mary Landrieu ever STHU? Ever? Aggggggggh!
