A drunk driver ran into me when I was 19 years old, I was in a full body cast for months....my friend, in the passenger seat, broke her neck. How I wish there were checkpoint in those days.

I bet the drunk driver walked away from the accident. They frequently do. The alcohol slows down their response times so that they don't brace themselves for the accident. They get tossed around in the passenger compartment a little, but no broken arms or legs.

Sorry for your pain and loss. Having said that, revenge is not worth the price of lost freedom.

You know a lot of people have been killed and maimed by drug dealers and gang members walking down the street. What would be really great would be pedestrian checkpoints. After searching them, in addition to rounding up guns and drugs we might discover all kinds of tax cheats and other criminals. If only we had checkpoints everywhere.

In fact I'm not so sure I want to stop at checkpoints. If we could get police officers into private parties and homes any time we wanted, we could catch the drunks before they even got into their cars.

Checkpoints find about 2 people for every 100 drivers stopped but they miss many drunks that could have been caught by roving patrols.

They are ineffectual as well as violative of the Constitution.

Suzanna Gratia Hupp's parents were gunned down in Luby's Restaurant in Texas.

Carolyn McCarthy's husband was murdered on the Long Island Rail Road and her son was gravely wounded.

Same problem, different solutions.

Hupp's solution was to be sure that the citizens could be armed in order to protect themselves, while McCarthy want's to ban guns which will ensure more victims and violates our right to keep and bear arms.

My point is that we see the same problem that you do, but do not see your 'solution' as effective or proper in a free society.

BTW, did you know that more people are killed by sober drivers than by drunk ones?

A drunk 17 year old hispanic male (with 3 friends in his car) ran a stop sign westbound on East Moss (Chula Vista) and Melrose Ave. My wife was northbound on Melrose. The impact shoved my wife's car a full lane width west and wrapped the Saturn SW2 around the front of the drunk driver's car. The accident happened 3 blocks from my dad's home where I was visiting after a night at my 30th high school reunion.

I had only 5 payments left on the SW2. It only had 35,000 miles on it. The way we drive in Idaho, that may have last us another 10 years. We were due to drive home to Idaho the next morning. My wife was Ok, but we had to strip all of our luggage and personal effects from the car. I rented a car from Enterprise to drive home to Idaho. The drunk was convicted and won't be eligible for a driver's license until he is age 30. The insurance payoff was only for "current value" of the car. We purchased an F150 4x4 that will be paid off next year. Our family ended up with years of car payments again because of the dumbass drunk.

We lost five members of my high school class before graduation day. Two, Donna Cole and Jackie Brower, were in my German class. We had been friends for almost 5 years since my return to Chula Vista. They were killed in separate accidents a couple weeks apart. Head-on collisions caused by a drunk driver in the other car in both cases.
