In short, 10,000 years ago the medicine man said "eat this root....it will cure your ailment...". After 5,000 years of snake oil, pills, more pills, and even more pills, modern medicine has conclusively deducted "eat this root...........

Ah..... the space continuum trampoline: Thereby proving AFTER ALL that the earth is not spherical, but flat just like we knew all along! The earth is like a printed pattermn ON the trampoline and when you reach the edge, you simply transition to the other side. Falling off is too hard.
I also found gravity in Veronika Zenovas dimple., so don't take any of this too seriously!
