Douglas County sheriffs deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.
Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks. Mirecki

I didnt know them, but Im sure they knew me, he said.
Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.
I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind, he said. They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.
He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Im mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots, he said.
Douglas County Sheriffs Officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. They wouldnt say exactly where the incident happened, citing the ongoing investigation
The sheriffs department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or the sheriffs office at 841-0007.
Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a nice slap in the big fat face of fundamentalists.
The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.
No guy. Simply washing your hands of it won't get them clean. Only one side is advocating violence here. Only one. There is no moral equivalence.
We are in complete agreement here. Re - Chester et al.
Think what you want of me.
I do not think badly of you. Never have, never will. I don't agree with your positiopn on evolution, but that is already a given. :-)
Much better than being beheaded.
I did read. And you don't see me doing much flaming.
I just wanted your opinion of that post.
Dave, Dave, do mention that this was after you equated evolution with advocacy of pediophilia.
Thanks for the clarification. :-)
Well, this is an interesting twist. Hopefully, the professor was not seriously injured, and since he was treated and released, it sounds like he wasn't. How sad that some frevolutionists are exploiting this man's injuries to promote their own agenda against creationists. These were no more agents of creationism than an abortion clinic bomber is an agent of the pro-life movement.
I'm disappointed that we haven't seen more condemnation of these morons from the creationist camp. Instead, we've seen lots of skepticism and holier-than-thous.
If this was faked, then the man ought to go to jail. And I'll lead the charge. If it wasn't, then all creationists need to come out loudly condemning these thugs.
If the creationists don't, they're no better than the "moderate Muslims" who say they decry the violence but won't actually raise a voice to stop it.
Time will tell. But if an arrest is made, or a perp identified, then I expect the creationists to apologize and loudly condemn the morons.
I take no pleasure in the physical pummeling of an ideological bubblehead. I am amused, however, at folks who are all puffed up with self-righteous indignation when their whole philosophy of life entails mere particles in motion due to unguided, unintelligent causes.
It just goes to show ya that in this country we have free speech but you still have to pay for the consequences.
If violence is the consequence of speech, then it isn't "free." The Colonists had that "freedom" under the king.
"Who wants to take bets that this turns out to be phony?"
That was the first thought I had when I read the headline.
Our town supposedly had a rash of violence against peace protestors and Muslim property shortly after 9/11. Every incidence was phoney, or no evidence was found to back up the so called incidences.
Also, it makes you look like an idiot for misspelling "Christianized".
"Instead, we've seen lots of skepticism and holier-than-thous."
I don't see how skepticism is incompatible with condemnation. I think the majority would agree that if it did actually occur, it should be condemned. There are a sad few who seem to disagree, but I think that's what most of us think. It probably didn't happen (way too many red flags), but if it did, then the people responsible should be held accountable.
"But if an arrest is made, or a perp identified, then I expect the creationists to apologize and loudly condemn the morons."
I won't apologize, but I will (and am) loudly condemn any such behavior.
Well, there you have it. I have to go with the Tawana Brawley-style delusional fantasy (i.e., lie). But if he was roughed up for heckling, so what? Maybe more of these wacko secular humanist bigots would watch themselves if they knew they had to put their money where their mouth is.
But the whole thing sounds like a gay bondage fantasy.
Maybe the Reverend Al Sharpton can represent him.
You'll have to show where a fundamentalist on Free Republic says that "slavery is moral". If any-one tries to do that , the admins tend to boot those folk out quickly!
If you are incapable of recognizing the phenomena of cause and effect in this case, I reckon you are also incapable of recognizing sarcasm. Why not be consistent yourself and attribute this event to a mere matter of course? No sense in becoming all indignant over a few rearranged molecules, right?
The guy is a kook! From his ranting, it sounds like he wanted it to happen and is just too glad to ham it up for the media.
