Police stop truck carrying missile launchers on Toronto-area highway
Intelligence Summit 2006 ^

TORONTO - The army is looking into a bizarre incident in which a tractor-trailer loaded with anti-aircraft missile launchers was seen rolling down a major Ontario highway.

Several police cruisers were needed to pull over the vehicle as it travelled westbound on Highway 407 near Toronto.

The trailer was carrying two armoured personnel carriers bearing Department of National Defence licence plates and loaded with anti-aircraft missile launchers.

Police say the carriers, formerly registered to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, were supposed to be delivered to Montreal on Thursday.

Police took the driver into custody at the scene, and the armoured carriers have been taken to a storage depot.

A spokeswoman for the Department of National Defence says the army is investigating.

"At this point, I don't have any confirmation on anything," said Lieut. Morgan Bailey.

You can have all the launchers you want, but without the actual missiles, they won'd be much more useful than any other piece of steel rail.

Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Farquhar was instrumental in assisting Hamilton Gault in founding the regiment.
Colonel Farquhar, Military Secretary to Canada's Governor General, the Duke of Connaught, asked the Duke of Connaught for permission to name the regiment after his daughter, Princess Patricia of Connaught.
She was pleased to accept this honor and thus the Princess Pat’s were established.

Main thing is the warheads are pretty darn small.

I've notice people sort of blindly assume that any airliner hit by a MANPADS will crash which is assuredly not the case. Not that it's something to be ignored but at times it's overhyped.

Was under heavy stress due to family issues at home and screwed up delivery date and was basically driving around "lost" in more ways than one.

He lives in Canadistan...of course he's lost.

Yikes! Let's hope this was just a mix up and someone who shouldn't have them didn't get their hands on these things.

You can't get from Toronto to Montreal by going west.

The punch line in the classic Maine joke is "25,000 miles, and some of it's damn bad wheelin'."

WTF?!? Why were several police cars needed to stop this guy?

I am shocked! ...Canada actually has armored vehicles and missiles?

Now, now, don't rush to any conclusions. LOL

Exactly the kind of guy I'd want hauling this type of load.

it was the parent outfit of the Canadian snipers who served with distinction in Afghanistan

I believe so, and IIRC, they received more recognition of that fact in the U.S. than they did here.

What theya re assuming is that the engine is hit and tears large areas of the wing' or wing root (or tail) is hit, and the plane loses the stability.

THIS SIZE missile would (most likely) not be armed into a carrier on a commercial truck - BUT, it could be.

Many "truck/tank-body/APC-carried" missiles are "stowed" in the launcher as ready rounds.

"I've always wondered about that. A 747, for instance, is a damn big airplane and, even if a Stinger managed to take out one engine, so what?"

Hit one of those big turbofans with a missle and the engine will likely come apart with explosive energy. If you are lucky it will rip itself off the nacelle before doing this. A damaged turbfan, as it tears itself apart might take part of the wing with it. As it comes apart or blows up, pieces flying off of it can severly damage control surfaces or penetrate cabin, etc.

Lots can go wrong. Depending on where and how the missle actually hits the damage can be surviveable on an aircraft that big, or catastrophic.
